The multifunction inkjet printers in this series use four ink cartridges so that you can refill one color at a time. Each of these small-office models prints, scans, copies, and sends faxes. We reviewed the Brother MFC-5840cn, which includes memory-card slots and an Ethernet port for network readiness, as does the 3340cn; the 5440cn is network ready, but it lacks digital-card ports. Both the 5840cn and the 5440cn allow you to copy a stack of pages at a time via an automatic document feeder. Most models in this series feature flatbed scanners, except for the sheetfed variety offered by the 3240cn and the 3340cn. You can add wireless networking to any of these printers with the NC-2200W print server.

Summary: The Brother ran slow across the board. Text printed at a sluggish 3.4 pages per minute--far below the 6.2 ppm average for the nine MFPs we tested for the June 2005 chart. Color graphics emerged at a snail's pace of 1.1 ppm, slower than any other model ...
Summary: The Brother MFC-5440CN's truckload of features includes a network connector and automatic document feeder, but it's notably slow, and its output quality is slightly below par.
Summary: The Brother MFC-5840CN is good value for a networked MFP, but slow speeds and middling print quality limit its usefulness in an office setting.
