"Not worth it at all"
Pros: Easy setup. Worked okay out the gate
Cons: Depletes color inks even when set to black only. Shows tanks empty when just under 1/2 full. Will not print if any tank depleted (and that happens when tank is just under 1/2 full)
Summary: Did lot of homework before buying. Not sure why not one mentioned the 'won't print in black if a color tank is empty' feature. The tanks show as empty when just under 1/2 full. Then the machine will not print until you install a new/full cartridge. I am very embarassed to have bought this albatross. Next time I stick with Canon

Same problem with my printer. I barely use it and my ink is always empty. I am in the process of buying a Canon and I hope i have better luck. Did I mention that I threw my Brother out the window?

I've had this printer/MFC for over 6 months now. We did a lot of research before buying it and thought it was the best option for our limited budget... but it's turned out to be way more expensive than we thought.
The printer will not print, even B&W, if any of the other cartridges are running low. The error message is enough to drive one crazy.
The paper loader tray is extremely tough to pull out. For context, it usually takes my boyfriend a few minutes of wrangling to get the tray out as well. I have to wrestle the printer to the ground.
If you're buying this to network with more than one computer - forget it. We have four computers that we tried hooking up to the network, the printer will usually not print unless all the other computers are on. On the rare occasions that it has, the printer goes offline within the next few minutes.
The printer has now been offline with a 'paper jam' error for three days.. even though there is not a trace of paper anywhere in it. I'm ready to throw this one out of a 10th floor window - if I can find one. -
Oh, Brother! The guy that programmed this thing is guilty of crimes against humanity.

I didn't have the issue that pyromr had. My MFC-5440cn worked pretty good, with no ink cartridge issues right up until it quit printing. This was less than one year after I purchased the thing. First the color quit. The printer would act like it was printing but the page would come out with no color ink on it. Then the black quit and the printer would output a completely blank page. I suspect that Brother has some quality control issues they need to work out. I know I won't be purchasing another Brother any time soon.

I agree with pyromr's opinion. This is a total waste of time. Just yeaterday it said 3 out of the 4 ink cartridges were empty (mind you, they were just less half, which mean i could not print anything until they are all replaced. So, I went out and purchased all 3 ink cartridges, replaced them and ready to print. Oh no! Now my 4th, black, ink cartridge is empty, which is just less than half. So, now I cannot print anything. I happened to have two other printers from college days, and they are printing perfectly. At least I can print even if one cartridge is finish. This Brother printer deplete the ink in no time. If you have an emergency and need to print something, this is not the printer for you. REMEMBER, YOU CANNOT DO ANYTHING WITH THIS PRODUCT UNTIL YOU REPLACE ALL THE INK CARTRIDGES. YOU WERE WARN. SO DON'T BE LIKE ME AND START YOUR RESUME AND GET SCREWED OVER BECAUSE THIS STUPID THING WONT PRINT UNTIL AN EMPTY CARTRIDGE IS REPLACED. DONT' EVEN THINK YOU CAN PRINT IN BLACK ONLY--IT WON'T LET YOU. I AM GOING TO SELL MINE, SO IF YOU WANT THE TROUBLE. LINK ME UP.
