"Despite its many features, its many weaknesses degrades its strengths." on by AJ_da_bomb

Pros: Brother MFC-640C is an all-in-one machine wih an excellent, easy-to-set up networking capability, It is small, compact, and has many features including SD, Flash reader slot for printing photos

Cons: However, its slow printing speed, and its overall slow performance are disadvantages that comes with its compact size and cheaper price

Summary: Although initially it may seem impressive beacuse of its compact size, and variety of features, this all-in-one small office machine may be problematic as it was to me.
The software setup for wireless networking was suprisingly simple and worked correctly the very first time I installed it in my networked computers. Also because I am able to flawlessly print to and scan from this machine through my networked computers shows that Brother does have its strengths in integrating network capability to this MFC (multi-function-center).
However, it has many problems. 1) Printing is slow avg. 15ppm in med quality 2)Sending faxes is slow but it works; receiving faxes however has many some problems especially if you have only one phone line (which I have). I assumed a fax machine should be able to automatically receive fax calls but it causes problems

I have to agree that this machine is not designed for heavy-duty use. It's obviously not built ruggedly enough to last many years in a demanding, high-traffic environment. On the other hand, for the light-duty requirements of a single home-office user, it does everything except wash the dishes at what I think is a very reasonable price.<br><br>Still, the remarks about the machine's speed are well taken. A recent fax I received may help to quantify "slow." The machine received a 25 page fax in my absence. The first page is time stamped 8:58 p.m.; the last 9:06 p.m.<br><br>Most of my faxes, however, in or out, are 1 to 4 pages. They don't take much more than a minute.<br><br>There is no doubt in my mind that this is a good little machine. Judge for yourself whether it is suited to your requirements.

I own, regretfully, one of these Brother all in one printer/fax etc. I have been trying to obtain information from Brother on why, after 5-6 months of use, we must re-load it every day. They have not responded to email submitted via their own site, they have no phone number so you may speak with a person and their troubleshooting is a joke. If you are considering the purchase of one of these, you might want to try contacting Brother before purchasing because their service center consists of blocks where you select their option and then they do not respond. I have been trying for nearly 10 days now and no response from the company. Very disappointing, my grade would be closer to a 3, and only because it used to be a good printer, it is getting ready to have a new career as a flower pot. AleeaB
