"Big Bang for the Buck - Low Cost of Ownership."
Pros: Built In Wireless - Put it where you need it without limitation.
PC Fax & Scan - Save Paper and Toner.
Auto Document Feeder - Walk Away.
Post Script Drivers - Free.
Web / Desktop Administration.
Small Footprint.
Very quiet.
Low Cost of Ownership.Cons: No Auto Duplex (You can't have everything - at least at this price).
Summary: I researched a lot of MFC devices and found the Brother MFC-7840w, to be the best bang for the buck - especially on sale - I paid 240.00 CDN.
Quick Setup doesn't tell you 'everything' you might need for a 'quick setup'.
Wireless was a big plus for me - I have a 'century' home office. The majority of my telecom is wireless - handled by Panasonic expandable handsets. So being able to use my MFC while not having to be tied directly to it was a huge benefit.
Setup took a little longer than say a simple printer, with instructions dead on the money - unless you are setting up wireless - where you may need to do a little more research. It does have a built in quick setup that would work very quickly for most common setups.
However, if you are like me and filtering MAC addresses, you will find yourself asking questions like, "Where's the MAC Address for this thing?" or "What's the default administrator password for the remote management?".
2 'Googles' later, I was all good - Brother has a very good FAQ.
I could have found these answers very quickly in the User's Guide or application help with a few more minutes.
On the topic of scanning - I've found it to be very fast and decent. It may simply be a software or driver error for the 'low' review posted here. I have yet to see a review with a similar complaint on any site, but don't just take my word - check around.
This is the third Brother printer I have owned - my other 2 are several years old and still going strong. Conversely, my Samsung decided it was time to send toner everywhere after only 2 years and the toner was twice the cost.
Do some comparative shopping and you can find the TN-360 Toner (2600 pages) for ~28.00 or less. The replacement drum (12,000 pages) can be found for ~55.00.
That puts the cost per page at less than 1.5 cents (0.0153 / PP). Hard to beat for value.
So, don't let one bad user review here fool you. Look around - Mac and PC users alike agree this Brother is top-tier value. If you are looking for a steady workhorse, look no further.
