"Software is a disaster for XP users" on
Pros: prints & faxes well, scan quality OK.
Cons: Software very very outdated. Original manual inadequate. Updated info in several read-me files and online difficult to sort out. Online updates do not help much. Print/Scan additional features don't well with XP or Word 2000.

I just installed a 8440 for one of my clients. They have a peer-to-peer network with 4 XP machines. I had no problems at all. The install was quick, and easy. (Too bad actually since I bill by the hour <img border="0" src="http://www.cnet.com/i/mb/emoticons/happy.gif" alt=":)"> )<br><br>I'm so impressed by this machine, I'm thinking of getting one for myself.

I use this multifunction every day, I have over 10,000 prints and even more scans and it works flawlessly with Windows XP and Paperport 8.0 I have had no problems with XP.

The Scansoft Paperport software interface is probably responsible for the lousy scan images from the Brother machines. Scansoft has not gone to any trouble to make it's software work with XP. I made the mistake of upgrading the software and it's even worse than before. Scansoft doesn't give a damn. I copmplained to tech support months ago and no fixes or updates ever posted.
