"Brother inkjet printers are TERRIBLE" on by dzntmatera

Pros: phone, answ. machine, PC-fax, scanner work fine

Cons: printer burns through ink, basically unusable

Summary: The printer part of the Brother inkjet printers cleans itself at regular intervals, using up ink from all 4 cartridges each time. This is especially a problem with a printer like the 845CW that is left on all the time because of the answering machine and the fax. After replacing all the printer cartridges on my printer, over a period of a couple of months I used my printer for only black copies and only about 20 or so sheets total, and the printer stopped working because two of the COLOR cartridges were out of ink! I couldn't even print in black again until I replaced the color cartridges. Apparently Brother inkjet printers use all the color cartridges to print black, instead of simply using the black cartridge. I love the other features on this and the other Brother MFC printers, but Brother will not change this horrible design problem with the printer function (I called the customer service # and they were not apologetic at all about this design problem).
Don't buy Brother MFC inkjet printers unless you don't want to use it as a printer. I have since bought a Brother 5250DN laser printer to do my printing (an excellent machine), and continue to the use my MFC for all its non-printer features.

"Very 'user unfriendly'" on by leopmahon

Pros: Good build and separate inks

Cons: Difficult setup for the layman!

Summary: The user guide has 188 pages and for the home user can be difficult to follow in places. As a home user, it took me three days to get all the functions to work properly. The photo quality is just average compared with some Canon cheaper printers. I think Brother went a bit OTT in including too many choices and a complex (for the home user anyway) setup procedure. For the home user it's overkill and complicated. If you want to print photos, scan and copy something like the Canon MP160 will do all that much with three clicks of the mouse.

"Excellent value for your $$" on by jbradley59

Pros: Ease of use and setup.

Cons: Mount for handset could be better positioned.

Summary: Purchased with a $70 rebate. The features and being wireless ready at that price works for me. In the home setting, this printer meets all my requirements. The scaning is excellent, including photos. I am very happy with this purchase.

"I would rate it zero stars if the web site allowed it." on by troyhenderson

Pros: Has several functions that are helpful.

Cons: The several helpful functions all have major flaws. Where to begin.....
A: The wifi has settings for all the current security options, but will only work in WEP.
B: The paper tray is ridiculously small. Roughly 40 sheets of paper and it's full.
    C:

Summary: The ink replacement alone will justify purchasing a color laser jet. The frustration will make you hope that you have medical insurance that covers anger management. If I had realized how bad it was sooner I'd have returned it. If I hadn't spent so much money for it I'd have replaced it years ago. Now it's finally just started spouting random errors and will not do anything. Thank you for breaking so I can justify getting something that is better than the cheapest HP all in one. Cyanara, paperweight!

"Great multi-function unit for the price." on by whtefur

Pros: Wireless makes set-up easy. Cordless handset has speaker phone ability. Fantastic print quality in both black and color. Long-lasting ink cartridges.

Cons: Editing photos from the scanner is complex. Wireless technology does not work well with Vista. Printer needs to be deleted and reinstalled every time it's used. No problems with XP.
