"Can be painfully slow on startup" on February 11, 2005

Pros: All in one product allowed me to get rid of older scanner and printer. Nice to have FAX machine and automatic document feeder for copying--very handy. Has Good print quality and it is easy to replace cartridges.

Cons: * The biggest problem with which distrubs me most is the slow startup. When you go to print something first time it will make lots of racket for 10 seconds or so before it prints. What is it DOING! Just print. Then in about 1 minute it goes into a low pow

"After four years, VERY disappointed!" on August 7, 2007 by krisks75

Pros: Multiple functions in one machine

Cons: Mediocre print quality, printhead issues, interrupted telephone calls

Summary: I have had this product for almost four years now, and I have been VERY disappointed in it. The biggest issues I have with the machine are as follows:

1)The printhead went out about two years ago, after warranty, of course. The color printing now is two-toned with horizontal streaks. I have just been making do with it for the past little while, as it will cost a minimum of $130 to get the printhead replaced.

2) The quality of the color printing never was the best even when the printhead was working; my sister has a similar multifunction machine made by HP (Office Jet G85), and the quality of her color printing was always better than my Canon.

3) This machine interrupts my telephone calls, mistaking them for a fax. Very annoying and very embarrassing, particularly if it is a business call. And there is no good way to immediately terminate the phantom fax other than unplugging the phone line from the wall.

If I had to do it over again, knowing what I know now, I would NOT buy this model.

"1 Year Later, Still The Absolute BEST Printer I Ever Purchased!!!" on March 17, 2005 by Strats2

Pros: Super reliable, very quiet, super cheap ink cartridges.

Cons: There doesn't seem to be any audible incoming ring when receiving faxes. I just may not have found it though...

Summary: Having been a die-hard HP fan for the last ten years, I bought this MP730 after reading magazine reviews online and seeing this one consistently making Editor's Choice awards while the HP's did not.
I now know why. Friends who bought the comparable HP d145 have gone through 3 of the HP's in less than a year. It's sad but HP's quality has gone down the tubes.
This Canon is so quiet and reliable, and the print quality is uncommingly good for a multifunction. The price was a little steep initially, but then the total cost of ownership (purchase price + cartridges) makes up for it over one year (if a heavy user or 2 years if light). You can buy generic cartridges online for <$4.00 each. What a nice departure from HP and Lexmark, where they sell you the printer cheap but rob you on the cartridges.
The included software utilities are super easy to use and don't take up too much space on disk.
Overall, this is the best MFP out there, although it has been replaced by the MP780, which I have no need to check out thanks to my MP730's quality.
It's a little slow on start-up, but that is easily overlooked when compared to the pro's.

Pros: Easy Setup, QUIET printing, easy faxing.good color prints

Cons: None but don't get me started on HP products!

Summary: I am SO glad that I switched to Canon. No more mechanical noises! Easy to set up with step by step sheet.
Like the individual cartridges to save on color printing and photos.
This machine prints SO quietly.
Faxing is EASY with top feed.
Quality of printing is excellent. Simple to align cartridges.
Can adjust with a touch of a button density to get clearer copy of light original.
Bought this off EBay brand new! Great buy,
GREAT product.
My HP all in one lasted one and one half years, and after two situations with HP, will no longer consider them reliable.
