"consistently good"
Pros: Footprint / Design / Good, quiet printing and copying
Cons: LED readout neds a backlight
Summary: I swapped a working Canon s300 printer and Visioneer One-Touch scanner to gain 2 square feet of desk space. Well worth the effort.
The s300 had been a dependable printer with terrific results for its price range at the time. The new MP130 uses the same bci-24 cartridges: since I have about $100 worth in the drawer, I had a good excuse to upgrade a bit.
The mp130, like the s300, is entry-level, which is perfect for home use - and for me. I'm a writer/artist and print multiple drafts of 100-300 pages on occasion. I never had a blink of trouble from the s300 in the 5 years or so I used it. I expect the same from the mp130. But this printer is a little faster (quite a bit faster in b/w) and much, much quieter.
The copy function is straightforward, and much simpler with an all-in-one than separate scanner and printer. My Visioneer One Touch never was one-touch: functionality was flawed from the start - for instance, light wouldn't turn off between scans, so their support said "shut it off between scans". But that's not how it was supposed to work! When I brought a new computer with Windows ME into the picture, their driver downloads didn't help much - and switching to XP earlier in the year reduced functionality even more.
All good reasons to move up to a new, forward-compatible machine. PLUS a selling price of $90 this week at CompUSA (just until yesterday) couled with a $50 rebate that applies because I bought a laptop this summer. For under $50 (including tax) I brought home this dandy multi-function.
BTW, I do a lot of digital photography, and edit / select photos in photoshop, but I do little printing of photos at home. The price of ink and papers takes the charm out of home photo printing for me. I load my selections onto a cd and have them printed nicely down the street on Kodak machines. For the minimal use I make of photo-print functions this is fine.
