"DO NOT buy a Canon Printer of Any kind!!!"
0.5 starson by brennan2374Pros: Works until the ink is low.
Cons: Cannot Fax or Scan if ink is low/out. No ink Refills.
Summary: The fact that Canon shuts down all functions because the unit is low or out of ink is complete garbage. For them to program in this function is complete bull. Do not buy a canon product...if they accidentally made this mistake than no problem....but they purposely do not want the unit to work until you fork out more cash for their low quantity ink cartridges. Look elsewhere...HP or Epson.

I have a Lexmark X75, it prints until ink runs out, but won't print black text doc when colour is out (I think it's because it actually does use some colour in black text docs - compare black text docs that have been printed with or without the "print in B/W" option checked when colour is low/nearly out). I have found that I can trick my machine by taking out the old cartridge and then putting it back in, and then selecting that it "is a new cartridge" under the Solutions Centre (maintainence program). The printer thinks that I installed a new cartridge, when I didn't, and prints colourless B/W text docs/ black-less colour docs without out a hitch. And when I finally do get a replacement cartridge I install it and tell the printer that it has another new cartridge via the solutions centre.

The poster is referring to the fact that you can't even use NON-INK functions like sending a fax or scanning a document when the ink is out. Additionally, you can't print in black and white when a color cartridge is out, or vice versa. Additionally, although I have never printed a photo in my life on my Canon, I have had to replace the "photo black" cartridge several times.

Just about every printer made shuts down operation if the ink is run out or even almost has, my Epson printers have always done this, so have the HP printers I've used.
It is done to protect the printer from damage to the printer heads from air pockets in the ink flow (I think I read), whatever the reason it is a common precaution.
So this reviewer probably has very limited experience with InkJet printers otherwise he would have known this and not gotten upset.
Or he has some hidden agenda against Canon and is posting to get back at the company (could be)> -
Its a sad state of affairs that a perpetual ink cartridge has not been invented. <br><br>This printer has an ink cartridge level indicator which shows on the LED screen with every document printed. All you have to do is keep an eye on it and when you see a cardridge running low, have one on hand for when it runs out.
