"One of only few MFC's that can forward your faxes via email" on by Eddie10011

Pros: Forwarding of faxes via email; great looking machine

Cons: Quirky, non-friendly user interface. A real pain to set up.

Summary: I "upgraded" to this machine from a Brother MFC 8500, which compared to this machine worked a lot more predictably. Although it's capable of much more than other MFC's (i.e. networking, e-mailing of faxes sent and received, scanning to usb flash drive, scanning to networked computer), it is not an easy machine to operate. Things that should take one or two key punches (faxing or scanning) require far more key strokes than they should. Sometimes the machine makes you repeat the entry since the machine hasn't warmed up. Otherwise, the main reason this machine is worth getting is the fax forwarding capability (a great convenience for me) and print quality which I think is excellent. It's really the forwarding of faxes (as pdf or tiffs) which really make up for this machine's shortcomings.

"Workhorse has it flaws but good overall" on by jpingel

    Pros: Good quality, fast prints

Cons: not too loud, but more so then I would like. Long warm up times. Dell ink smudges very easily (bad for envelopes due to possilbe lost addresses from smearing)

Summary: Not perfect, but great for the price.

"Worst printer ever" on by edschultz2k

    Pros: nothing is positive

Cons: Auto feeder, paper supply, fan

Summary: This printer is a complete failure. The paper feeder jams every 3rd time I use it. You can load only 1/5 of a tray of paper and it jams every other use. Lastly it is loud - the fan runs for 10 minutes post use. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!

"Printing, copying - just NOT scanning... With Vista, that is..." on by dakata

Pros: fast printer, solid, decent price for features

Cons: Needs to warm up each task, NO SCANNING in Vista as advertised...

Summary: So, been a day - mostly trying to get it to work. Printing was easy to setup and works fine, and so does copying. But scanning with Vista - what a nightmare... I know a fair bit of computers, drivers, install files and the lot, but this is really ridiculous if they expect this to be a small business/consumer product! Vista just does not function with scanning software that was supposed to be provided. Original CD disk had Paperport on it, but when you go to Dell website and download the new 'updated driver software', funny enough, it is not included! There is good reason though, it just doesn't work. Vista has trouble with network connection, so I think they need to use a piece of software "dell network scan manager" to make scanning work. No Paperport though, so I don't think you get OCR without figuring out how to make it work on your own - maybe have to buy software?

Anyhow, seems like a good unit other than scanning, for mostly I bought it for! : )

Old threads on the net refer to this problem back early in 07 and it still exists, yet Dell sell this as being fully compatible with Vista. I think not!

Almost forgot to mention the most irritating part, you will always have a little yellow exclamation mark on your Device Manager since the driver doesn't work properly.

I hear on XP the unit seems to work fine.

    "Aaaaaaaaaaagh!" on by katelyngirl

    Pros: Worked one day!

    Cons: Broke second day!

Summary: Spent all day reloading the disk, shut off my computer, shut off the printer. Nothing. Called the sales person at Dell. Unfortunately, she felt it was unnecessary to return my call as she would receive no commission. Spoke to an individual who she later referred me to and he told me I had to purchase a box to ship it back(at a minimum of $20!). He could care less. This will be my last Dell purchase as Dell only cares about the sale. They let the US customer agents deal with new sales and India, the Philippines, etc to deal with all other issues. It's not worth it. I'm a minority, so I can say that these offshore companies do not work. Dell sucks!
