"Warning - Design defect"
Pros: Good capabilities & price
Cons: Design defect - impairs scans
Summary: DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER AT THIS TIME. The Dell 1600n printer has a design/manufacturing defect. Use causes the underside of the scanner glass to be coated with a film or residue eminating from inside the machine that can not be cleaned off - it is not reachable by the end user. Dell has been made aware of the problem. Dell acknowledges that the condition exists but refuses to admit that it impairs scan quality. Can scanning through dirty glass be OK? I don't think so. Dell's own manuals state that the top of the glass must be kept clean in order to achieve high quality scan. How is the bottom of the glass any different?

We copied thousands of documents and I haven't seen any impurities in the printouts. I imagine that it will be an issue in high-res color scanning where you may see the dirty glass.

Yes... this happened to me.. and I called dell. Luckily, there was a capture, and we had our unit replaced free of charge. But, the same problem happened with the second printer. Some dirty hands and a dirty rag caused all of this.
