    "Wow. What a no brainer..."

by spencertstealth on May 3, 2005

Pros: Excellent value. Great quality copies, feature laden, great scans, great prints, easy faxing

Cons: Not many cons. The fan is a bit loud but easily tolerable. Obviously doesn't do color. No duplex option.

Summary: Struggling to find any reasonable cons for this printer, I came up with stupid things like "Doesn't do color"...duh. and No duplexing option. Again, what do you expect for this price range.

The fan is only loud (and reasonable loud, in my opinion) during action. When it goes into sleep/wait state, it is silent.

The editor's review is out of date. Since the time of their review, Dell has released network scanning capability for this printer, which is really quite nifty. You configure the various computers on the network with the scan drivers, and when you scan from the printer, it asks you which computer to send it to. You put in a pin number for that computer, and the scan opens on that pc in the appropriate application. You can choose what application to scan it to.

Another item that is unclear in the editor's review and not explained on Dell's website is the printers ability to print to Legal and other sized paper as well as the copier/scanners ability to copy/scan Legal sized documents. This can be a fairly important feature for small offices. I can confirm that you can scan/copy/print from/to legal sized documents.

The flatbed scanner is only letter sized, so you can scan legal sizes from the flatbed, but the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) will accept legal sized documents without a hitch. The copier will also give you options to reduce and enlarge the copy, so you can copy Legal documents down to letter, if you desire.

Another item that isn't completely explained in the network scanning capability, is that the network scanning is limited to 3 modes. 100,200,300 DPI black and white or 200 DPI Color scan. If you NEED any resolutions beside these defaults, you MUST use the USB cable to do the scan, not the network scanning.

I don't see this as a problem, however, since most network scanning is going to be done at one of these defaults anyway.

I read that the printer was extremely slow. I suppose that is relative. I find it to be comfortably fast for my small office environment. If the printer has been idle for some time, it may require 25-30 seconds to warm up before the first print can occur. Once it is warm, it goes pretty fast.

I really enjoy this printer, especially at the price. I purchased my on sale for $299 and was very happy with that price. I think it is easily worth more than that. I recommend this printer to anyone who wants to consolidate functions into a single device that can Scan/Copy/Fax/Print. This thing is awesome and for the price, a no brainer.

The CNET editor's review for the Dell 1600n is out-of-date, deceptive, and needs to be updated. I read the user's review titled "Wow, what a no-brainer", and found it extremely useful, actually making a purchase decision on that basis. Particularly, the review corrects the wrong impression on the supposed network scanning deficiency, which no longer exists. The Dell 1600n is a good product for the price, and I'm placing an order for one!
