"excellent all in one" on by cedarky

Pros: office level machine at a home office price. photos are best of all the multifunction; better than inkjet and nearly filmlike. backlit high-res lcd screen controls.

Cons: setup is less than smooth. tip: use their short usb cable or the printer drivers may not properly load. cheapest high capacity toner not at staples but online at epson!

Summary: this is an amazing accomplishment for epson. its a pc mag editors choice and it deserves to be. i did a lot of research and thinking about this and maybe you can benefit from it.

first, i debated between an all in one and a mix of a color laser, the minolta 2450 and a canon 2750 laser fax all in one. problem there is that you can't make the occasional color copy when you need it. also it takes up more space. in the end, i liked the elegance of having everything tightly integrated.

machines i reviewed were the all in ones by hp, canon, epson, and brother. i tested the machines not be having the machine generate a test page, but by taking an hp brochure and having each machine print a color copy, its most difficult task. i could not find the canon unit to try, but online consumer input has not been good for that unit.

the hp performed mediocre. good layout of controls, but the machine shakes and rattles as it prints. and, the print quality was poor: there was banding in the photo, a dark line right down the front of the photo. i switched to photo mode and this diminished the banding but left a magenta cast over the image. 4 out of 10 stars.

the brother multifunction bested the hp in print quality. no banding, good color correction, and a reasonable build quality. i must add that the controls seemed mediocre and not always intuitive. by the way, i'm a bit biased against brother since i'm trashing my brother multifunction after less than a year. that said, if the epson didn't exist, i would have purchased the brother. 7 out of 10.

however, the epson does exist and its a clear winner. the build quality is what you want for a business, solid fit and finish. the center lcd is welcome, with its eight lines easily readable. the menus are logical and easy to use. from a hardware standpoint its the best i've seen.

but the money is in the printing and this machine clearly bests the brother. on the brochure test, the smallest print was crisper and the photo was positively photographic.

documentation is adequate but i would go to support.epson.com if you hit any glitches. i spent almost an hour looking for a reason that the printer drivers would not load. turns out that that i needed a short, 6 ft usb cable that comes with the unit. my cable, a bit longer was losing some of the signal. i swapped out the cable and the driver loaded at once. good thing this was right in the FAQs online. it would be nice if the printed the FAQs and answers in the back of their setup manual.

consumables are cheapest at epson online. staples only carries the low capacity toner cartridges which are ludicrously expensive. buy the high capacity ones from epson and the printing costs are in line with the brothers. yes, the brother is still a bit cheaper to operate, but the print quality is so superior from the epson that it is definitely worth the little extra that it costs to operate.

my hat is off to the folks at epson. job well done.

    Updated
my friends came over at wanted to see what all the ruckus was about with this new machine. as an example i hunted down some 3x5 photos and copied them. everyone was slackjawed. they looked just like the originals.

when you register, epson gives you a coupon code to get 10 percent off consumables. i'm going to order some high capacity color toners.

    "Epson CX11NF" on by markky_04

    Pros: Quick Scanner,

Cons: No faxing capability, Messy print cardridge installation

Summary: I bought an HP 2840. It was extremely slow, especially for scanning. I work at a mortgage company and I was looking for an all in one multifunction for myself and my assistants It is awesome! It will allow everyone to scan to a network. The only bad thing about it is it wont let you fax from your pc. YOu can sign up for extremefax.com for that or you fax stuff from your computer using micrsoft xp. I also looked at the new multifunction scanner and I did not buy it because it wont let you scan to a network. HOw silly. Overall, I lose this thing. I will let you know if I see other other problems since I just got this today.

"Not as good as one may think" on by lfranz1234

Pros: Works great for about 4 months

Cons: 3 major componets have to be replaced at your cost

Summary: We had the Epson Aculaser CX11NF for 4 months before copies, faxes became unreadable. It turns out the 3 major working parts, Fuser, Photo Conductor, Development Unit have to be replaced within a year and every year after or less. Per the Epson customer service rep. These parts are considered consumables and are not covered under warranty and they run from $150 up to $275 each. They do not guarantee time limit on how long they will work before you have to replace them. Beware-this is right out criminal. We were never informed of this at time of purchase. We read the reviews and researched this printer and as you can see no one mentioned my expereince.

    "Perfect AIO" on by MrEgg

Pros: Fast, good scanning & printing

Cons: Small paper tray ; optional paper tray too expensive

Summary: I've been using the CX11NF for 2 months now, and I'm really happy I chose this AIO. I am using it in my home office. It is connected to my network router using a UTP cable, and I access it (scan and print) from my wireless laptop.

Scanning is very good and fast. The driver lets you choose between different modes, ranging from automatic pre-settings to fully manual settings.

Printing is very good as well. Although I was worried about the ghost images, I haven't been confronted to any such problem yet.

Faxing works fine, except that it is not possible to fax directly from the PC : you have to print the document first and then fax it. I was a bit annoyed with this at first, and then realized that - though I admit it isn't quite the same - I now much rather prefer scanning a document to PDF and email it directly from the PC : quality is much better, document can even be in color. This is possible using PageManager for Epson, provided along with the machine. Color faxing is possible according to the user guide, although I haven't tried it as none of my fax recipients have a compatible machine.

Copying is excellent. When using this feature, if copying in B&W, the scanning is quite fast and you get your copy quite quickly. Color copying gives you a result very close to the original, very satisfying for office needs.

When not printing, the machine is totally silent. Ventilation fan is only activated when printing. When printing, the noise is totally acceptable : I work quite close to where it stands and I hardly notice it. From this standpoint, it is much, much more silent than not-so-old laser color printers I've had (namely the Brother 2600CN).

The paper tray can only hold a maximum of 180 sheets, and the optional paper tray costs 283 euros over here, which I find outrageous. This is one of the two drawbacks I can find. This could be something to consider if you print heavy volume on a regular basis. If not, I don't find it too much of a hassle to refill the paper tray, compared to the quality of the product.

The second (and last) drawback I find is that received faxes cannot be stored automatically in a database on the computer. I was used to using WinFaxPro which would do such a thing and allow me to research for previously received documents. So important documents must be scanned and stored manually using, again, PageManager for Epson. This is just a habit to take.

"Great Machine - but worthless" on by kennydouglasw

    Pros: does everything well

Cons: now photoconductor replacements available from Epson for over 5 weeks now. They promise "soon".

Summary: Without the availability of replacment cartridges any printer is worthless. The Epson Store and all distributors have been out for over 5 weeks now. So it gets a "1". By the way, they will not let me return it...so i sit a wait.

    Updated
At the Epson site they are now offering this machine at a discount. So buy one unless you are planning on buying a new computer soon, because it won't work with Microsoft's Vista. Let's see...they have had only about a year or so to get new drivers ready.
