"Excellent entry-level bang-for-the-buck AIO"
Pros: fast scanner for photos with above average quality, great photo printer, excellent AIO
Cons: mediocre text scanning, slow photo printing.
Summary: I've had this unit for about 3 months now. Its scan speed is faster than some of the dedicated scanners that I've used at the multimedia labs at work. Resolution and color fidelity is also very well balanced with great software control. Text scans however, are somewhat out of focused, but otherwise acceptable. I am very impressed with the scanning quality.
I've only used glossy photo paper for printing photos on this printer (as oppose to premium glossy photo and premium photo plus). It's the cheapest photo paper out there and it works excellent on this printer. The colors and resolution often comes more accurate than photos developed by digital photo lab because I can match color profile between monitors and printers. The standalone photocopy feature also works great for documents and photoIDs and has significantly higher pixel count than regular postal office photocopier. The print speed is not a concern for me. Overall, the print/copy performance exceeded my expectation for an entry level AIO.
I've heard complaints about the print head on CX4600 clogging and sucking up ink like there's no tomorrow. So far, I haven't had any problems with my CX4800. I've printed about 50-60 (4x6) pictures to-date, and it only used up about 1/4 of each of the cartridge. Consumption wise, it's within the norm. And because the color inks are sold in separate cartidges, I can replace just one instead of all of the colors, making it more economical.
The unit itself is slightly hefty in size, and may require a good stable support structure to sit on as the print head motor translate quite a bit of momentum when it's going from side to side.
