"Wow - terrific!" on by nutnet

Pros: text quality, print quality, features

    Cons: speed on highest quality

Summary: Wow! A terrific printer... finally! I did so much research trying to find the right printer. I needed laser quality text, great quality photos/graphics (the things I print use graphics with photo quality effects on them, so they might as well be photos). I didn't care too much about speed. At first I thought I needed a laser to get the laser quality text, so I bought a OkiData color laser. It had great speed and good looking text, but the graphics were really poor, so I returned it. Finally the CX5800 came out and it the 'official' reviews looked like it had what I needed, plus the extra features of a copier and fax (it's got a camera memory card reader too, but I don't use it). So I bought it and I can confirm, WOW, it is amazing. The black text is definitely laser quality - in fact, it looks better than the laser I had. And for graphics/photos, it is also stunning! Previously, when I had a business letter that I needed to look top quality, I would print it on glossy photo paper for best results, but this printer does such a great job on plain paper (for letter head with logo) that I'm fine just sticking with plain paper.

One word of note, if you try to print n Fellowes Neato labels, the printer will indicate a paper jam, even though there isn't any. The work around for this is to just put the label sheet in upside down (i.e. normally you'd feed the top of the label sheet into the paper tray, but just flip it around so you feed the bottom of it into the paper tray) - this solves the problem.

I am so happy with this printer... finally, top quality print, with fax and copier features! I print everything using the highest quality settings, and it's actually pretty fast... an 8.5 X 11 business letter with color logo letter head takes about 30 seconds. And CD labels, full color, matte paper, take about 2 or 3 minutes. On ultra premium glossy paper, an 8.5 X 11 full color photo does take a little bit of time.. about 8 minutes or so (so if you're planning to print tons of these, you might need a faster printer), but wow, the results are worth it.

One thing I should mention is that it probably burns through ink pretty quickly, although I'm not sure as I just purchased it and haven't replaced the ink yet.

For comparison, I've owned three printers... an Epson stylus photo 1200 (which is a top of the line large format pro graphics printer), an Epson C42UX, and the OkiData printer which I mentioned above. The 5800 is better than all of them.... incomparably better!

"Two lemons in a row" on by spevenpph

Pros: Looked well designed from the outside

Cons: Print queue freezes, jets quickly clog up

Summary: I went through 2 CX5800F printers, then switched to an hp all-in-one 6210. Both Epson printers had very erratic output - when printing or simply copying. After multiple jet cleaning operations, they would start printing again (with 1 or 2 jets remaining clogged). Print jobs were always slow to start printing, and about once a week the print queue would stall (had to restart the PC to fix it). Tried e-mailing tech support - got an initial response but nothing after that.

    "OUTSTANDING MACHINE" on by rjmallory1

Pros: Great text, photo and fax.

    Cons: None right now.

Summary: I purchased this on April 14, 2006. So far this unit works flawlessly. I will be trying the scan function later today and will give an update when complete. I don't see where others trash this unit. Some have said it was an ink hog, while others had problems with the software. (The software can be a little tricky, but if you have a little patience, you won't have a problem. I am using Windows XP Pro.) So far the photos that I have printed came out beautifully (8" X 10"), taking a little more than two minutes at best photo setting.
The colors were vivid and true to life. I had used a Fujifilm A601 w/3.1MP

    Updated
The scan function works great, but I did have a bit of a problem initially. Ikept getting the message: "Cannot properly communicate with scanner. Make sure scanner is on, properly connected and properly set to scan. If using SCSI connection, restart your computer." I got in touch w/Epson support, and we tried everything, to no avail. I thought it might be the USB cable. I replaced it and BINGO!! It worked. DO NOT TRY TO USE ANYTHING OTHER THAN A USB 2.0 CABLE!!!!!! You WILL have the same problems I did. She is a scanning fool NOW.

"Can't Network With This All In One" on by yahelena

Pros: good price, solid build, mac compatible

    Cons: no networking capabilities

Summary: Honestly, I have not fully tested this all in one so I cannot comment on the print, scan, or fax quality. I purchased it because I thought it would work with my wireless network (con of the canon mp780), a necessity for my small business. I'm just so disappointed that it won't go wireless. I have used only Epson printers in the past and have always been pleased. Looking for an all in one that is mac compatible, has a fax machine, works on a wireless network, and faxes with VOIP is turning into a nightmare.

"Good for the price but..." on by ti01008

    Pros: Good Prints

Cons: Setup awful but can be done with patience

Summary: This was a good selection for the price. The Printer handles text and graphics okay. The photo output is good when set to best.

The setup was just awful. Took forever to figure out how to set the clock. Software for this needs improvement. Recommend experienced professionals only tackle setting this one up.
