    "Buyer Beware" on by sharonbrubaker

    Pros: Faster than most

Cons: Poor Print Quality/ Cannot Use Generic Ink without hassle/ cuts off part of scanning to .pdf/ tough to re-install software

Summary: I bought this printer and thought it was great for about a week and wrote a great review. The issues that I have with the printer are that
    1. The print quality was once excellent- but now is so bad (after 1 month of use) that the reds appear yellow and the blues appear green regardless of cleanings, changing of cartridges, or use of Epson cartridges only.
    2. Epson makes it difficult to use generic ink cartridges and you get an action message when you have a generic cartridge in the machine which pops up for every print job. It seems like no big deal- but it has slowed me down to the point that I don't use the printer anymore and have finally decided to go back to the higher priced mfg. ink cartridges. If you try and print 10 copies of the same page, it pops up 10 times and hangs up the printer until you click on OK.
    3. The scanning function is mediocore and not sufficient for my business- it also chops off images scanned to .pdf to the point where I have to manipulate them in photoshop before using them.
    4. Set up can be a nightmare- I had to return the first EpsonCX6600 for some sort of problem but had already installed the software on my computer- when I installed the second machine- it took me 4 times as long and I had to fake the software out to get it to work. I could not remove the old software and so I have 2 Epsons listed in my printers and I am unable to remove the first- which makes it confusing for others using the printers to figure out which one to use.
    Just my 2 cents

"Poor build quality, finicky printing" on by 1gromt1

Pros: jack of all trades device

    Cons: build quality

Summary: Bottom line: I had a prior version --CX5200 -- and it died in just over a year; printing heads clogged up and are not user cleanable, printing head continually lost alignment. Due to my complaints to reseller (and their acknowledgement of QC problems with prior model), I was given this brand new upgrade at a reduced cost. I brought it home, unpacked, used for a week and, quite frankly, build quality of this model is equally poor. Should have quessed as it's essentially the same machine as the prior model. Plastic is flimsy and poorly fitting, printing heads are inefficient and I cringe when I hear them "self-cleaning" so often. Consider an obvious problem: CNET reviewers don't have to live with their choices! They don't consider longevity or build quality in their reviews. You should.

Anyway, I do agree with CNET review in some respects: the scanner is first rate and the software makes it easy to use (though on winXP the software runs as a service and is a real memory hog). General printing is fairly fast and quality of output is good )(note about printing speed: ignore manufacturer's stats. Did you notice CNET's review? They boast that this model has the highest ppm listed stats, then with straight face point out that the printer didn't print at it's advertised speed! Bizarre). Also about quality: these other reviews raving about photo printing quality? Folks, what are you thinking??? Compared to a dedicated photo printer this "bulbous" jack of all trades obviously lags. Truth is, if you're looking for brilliant photo printer you should get a dedicated device, regardless of brand. You should buy this device for what it is: a multi-function device that performs respectably, but not brilliantly, at it's functions.

Anyway, I was quite disappointed with build quality of the cx6600, it just seeems equally as cheap as the prior model and I don't trust that it'll last any longer than my last one, and so I returned it to the store. I purchased instead a competitor's product (cost more) and I've been quite happy with it so far. Bottom line is: Epson's are cheap. That's why I kept buying them. Obviously, there's a reason why they're so cheap. I won't be buying another one.

"Serious Scanner Issues" on by sharonbru

Pros: Prints quickly and quietly- easy copy function. Ink comes in seperate cartridges for convenience

    Cons: Scanner cuts off images

Summary: This machine would be a perfect 10 if not for the scanner- which I rely heavily on. I actually thought it was the machine I bought until I purchased another identical unit and found it had the same issue. Scanning to .pdf shifts image to extreme left hand side. So I must scan the image as a jpg, paste into word and convert to a .pdf. Very time consuming. In addition, when I scan to a .jpg, often it will do the same shifting and will crop the images in inappropriate areas.

"Printer Head will go out" on

Pros: Ease of use, good print outs, quality while it works, value for price.

Cons: Print head is part of the printer and not the print cartridge in all of the current CX models and it will wear out in 1 to 2 years. Once this happens, the printer will streak and eventually print nothing. Epson is aware of this according to one of the rep

"Decent at everything, but not excellent" on by 10e

Pros: Scanning quality, built-in card reader, separate ink tanks

Cons: Scanning speed, irritating built-in head aligning routine

Summary: If you are looking for a great scanner, decent colour and graphics printer, and you aren't too sticky about photo quality, this is the printer for you. If you absolutely need a fax, why are you reading this?

The Durabrite inks are useful for avoiding problems (they do work by the way unless you spill alcohol on them). And make sure you initiate the head alignment routine from the PC. From the front panel it's an endless waste of time and ink. It never tells you that it's finished!

If you are particular about the photo printing quality and speed, go with something else. I would suggest Epson fans look at the six colour RX 600 or 620. The CX6600 is a below average speed and average quality photo printer. Photos lack detail and vibrance, and even at Photo RPM, non-high speed (5760x1440) mode on Durabrite glossy photo paper, this printer just can't compare with other cheaper printers.

Build quality seems pretty good, and it's not ugly, but I'm almost sorry I didn't go for the lower CX4600, because there isn't much the CX6600 does better than the 4600.

    Updated
After seven months, my printhead has also just stopped working. The black and magenta cartridge began to streak, and then each cartridge just stopped printing at all. Very nice, Epson... I would recommend a Canon or HP all-in-one instead. Let's see how the RMA process goes.
