    "Very good well-rounded machine."

by mcbently on October 15, 2006

    Pros: Ease of use

Cons: Takes a minute or so to warm up

Summary: I am a graduate student working as a private investigator and contract paralegal. I generally work out of my home, and I wanted a well rounded machine that could copy, fax, scan and print, plus work in a PC and Mac environment, network and not loose functionality on the Mac side. I looked first at the color units, but after doing the monetary math, and realizing how much it was going to cost me to have that capability, I decided it would be easier to just have a small color inkjet. I use the HP Deskjet 3520 for my color needs because my color needs are so few and far between. I tied the Brother line, and found them to be lacking in every area. I tied the Ricoh but it would not work in them Mac platform. I tired the HP 2840, but it was almost .25 cents a page as opposed to the HP 3390 which is only .08 cents a page. Plus I get approximately three times more the amount of printing.

In the Mac environment, this unit is very compatible. I get the full function of faxing, scanning, printing and copying from the Mac desktop. I found no other unit which would allow me to do all 4 actions. The software was very easy to install on the Mac. The desktop toolbar is very easy to use, and the scanning is very fast. I use an airport express for my wireless. My wife has an iBook, and I have a Dell. There is some loss of function when using the wireless networking on the express. We do not get the full control, however the printing functions are not lost and we can use them from any computer. If you want to have all 4 functions, then you must use the iMac on the desktop. There is a way to set up a wireless network, but that cost additional money for the equipment and I was very happy with what I got.

In the PC environment, the unit functions well. The software was easy to install, and I was able to find the printer through the airport express. Again, I do not get all the desktop functions through the express, but I do get the full range of printing options, and it works just fine. If I need more, I simply unplug the USB from the iMac, plug into my Dell, and I am up and running, no worries.

As far as full function wireless, I am sure there is a way to do it, however I am not that technological savvy, and so I did not worry. I am very happy with what I got. If you have a Mac, this is a very good MFC, and you are able to use all 4 functions. This was my biggest concern when looking for an MFC. This unit solved that problem. I have to say I very much like the duplex (front and back printing) option. It saves me steps by simply selecting this option and I get it wirelessly.

This machine is not loud, and it is not constantly cycling on and off. When it ?sleeps? it is very quite. When it prints, it makes noise, so if you are looking for a completely silent printer, this is not it. I leave the unit on 24/7, and never have any problems with noise. It is in my home office right next to my room. I have never heard it cycle on or off when it is sleeping. If you want to scan or copy, it takes a minute or 2 for the bulb to heat up, but I do not notice a long wait.

The downside, one tray for paper and the single sheet feeder does not have a lip or slider to hold the paper while waiting to be printed on. However the door closes nicely on the unit and it is not bulky. The optional stapler on the 3392 would be a nice feature on this unit.

All-in-all, I am very happy with this unit. I looked long and hard, tried several units, and this by far was the best choice.
