"Return it - HP cannot fix the problems - timewasting"
Pros: Print Quality, promises features
Cons: Bloatware unreliable software, bad support, unreliable faxing design, tiemwasting buggy installs,
Summary: Endless problems with HP multifunction products. I install multifunction machines professionally. HP should have fixed many similar problems found also in their earlier multifunction machines.
No background processing fax. Proper fax machines like the Brother MFC 5840CN - multifunction (color) machine scans the entire fax into memory before sending it, unlike the HP 7410, HP 7140Xi etc. This is a design fault because the HP scanners are not reliable and a miss feed multiage fax takes many minutes to resend.
Installing the above HP products you could spent a couple of hours per machine.. a great waste of time when you want to install the networked printer onto a few computers.
Software unreliable slow, very poorly designed (by the simple?) and released faulty. Massive time wasting downloads to upgrade the supplied software takes more time to install than XP and the updates. As this is a networked machine multiply that by the number of machines you expect to install.
After getting the software to install properly if you are lucky features drop off like the photo card reading. This even happens on new HP / Compaq computers! Their earlier software is totally incompatible (as released with other printer models) and numerous special fix programs have to be downloaded to try to uninstall earlier HP software. HP took little care to get the software tested.
Poor support, staff have little knowledge, little education ... Pay people $1.00 per hour to answer the phone.. What an insult to us the customers HP. You supply faulty product and faulty support. Trying to save money ... but not respecting our time HP even has cut the quality of the phone connections to the Indian based support center. Try reading out a number on a bad line.. Most sentences have to be repeated and the Indian support center staff have some absurd training program that does not teach them that we are not earning $1.00 per hour. Our phone call to HP support is losing us income and valuable time.
Ink system poorly designed for color users with two modes of Tri-color carts. Maybe much more expensive to run too?
Wireless should have had an access point option. Expensive.
Fax signal levels and equalization wrong on most units tested. Units may be unstable in high Magnetic / EMF field office enviornments. Run somewhat by it's own internal operating system in printer (user accessable), and machine does lock up requiring power down reset.

Office Depot has it at $199 after all rebates. But I now wonder if all the problems put themachine "on the cheap" = I need primarily an auto document feeder to scan loads of office files into a PDF format. Any ideas? Anyway, props to you for an excellent specific review! Saved me some grief and $!!

Now, before everyone swears off HP Multifunction products let's think this through. How is it that a few users love the product while others are outraged by flaws? I have a business that focuses on Custom Home Entertainment Design and PC Repair, Etc. We come accross calls from end-users all the time about all in one models, whether HP or Not. If you are having problems installing it, just call someone who can clean up your operating system and do it right the first time. I can't imagine walking someone through an installation not knowing what is on, or wrong with their PC. This is a big reason why those in India or anywhere else have a hard time helping HP customers. They are trained in HP Products, but not A+ Certfied situations which they really need to be in order to be effective.
My oppinion, the all in ones are great, actually my favorite, but expect to pay an extra 100-150 on a service call for installation whether www.techstrength.com, The Geek Squad or whomever. Then it least you don't have to waste your time on the phone or returning it. -
It's like all other computers and phones with "wireless" capabilities. You just have to learn the quirks. But, I hate it when I am away because it has spoiled me! It is DEFINITELY worth the difference. I use mine constantly from one piece to 250 pieces at a time! Now, I'd like you to come out with a very small portable to carry on my trips.

After many hours of being on the phone and chat with tech support still cannot install the product. The software finds the printer giving an IP address but then fails to install by looping back to start location. HP had me remove the firewall from my router, then remove the wired connection from a switch and go wireless. The same thing happened.
I was finally able to install the software on two out of four PCs successfully. But still can not get it to work on two other PC. HP support appears to be unable to solve the problem. today they told me to try replacing the router and would not listen to the fact that two PCs (all PCs are exact same HP model) running Windows XP pro work and the other two do not...
This pretty printer is going to be returned
Anyone have similar problems... -
I too install these things as part of my work. I fought with the crappy HP software and at first resigned myself to it as what was needed to make an MFC work. Then I worked with some competitors that did it logically, using more of the functionality built into Windows, and realized just how disappointing this entire product line has proven. Never again will I trust HP to deliver a product like this, especially when nearly every competitor does it so much better.

I've had to place at least 30 calls since last March to support. They rarely know what they are doing. The machine may work well with a USB but in wireless mode gets confused often "hanging up". It will scan fine then it will create large size files that can't be e-mailed. I think it is a waste of money to pay the extra $100 for wireless. It doesn't work on so many features I could write a book. I'm sending mine back in the hopes of getting a replacement since I bought an extended warranty. Maybe this one's a lemon.

I cannot agree more with Christopher C's comments. I have a 9110 all in one I bought at COSTCO. I have spent months trying to get the FAX to work properly. After a number of phone calls to India, and "try this", "try that" fixes. Nothing has worked. It is costing me business. I called COSTCO and I am returning the machine tomorrow for a full refund. I'll get another machine, but NEVER AGAIN an HP product. Buyer beware.
