  • "CNET led me astray! The J6480 doesn't work with VISTA!"

Pros: Great features for the cost.

Cons: Software doesn't work with Vista. Scanning defaults to TIF, creating giant files; won't scan in black and white and grayscale (gives error message). Updates won't fix the problem. Even tech support doesn't know what to do.

Summary: I got the J6480 because CNET editors recommended it, and because I had such great luck with the HP 6310 (running on a Windows XP laptop). I moved on to a new job, so picked up the J6480 to use at home and at my office (and now have a Vista laptop). I began scanning articles for my graduate seminar and noticed that files were 10 times larger than they were on the 6310, scanning in up to 1.1 MB per page. The files are too large to upload to my course management system--the server rejects them. I was online with a tech for over an hour and s/he couldn't fix the problem. Finally after 50 hours of uninstalling/reinstalling and searching manuals and online tech support lists, I discovered that Vista won't allow the HP scanning software to work correctly. How can CNET recommend this product with such a known problem? And how can HP not have an update available when one installs the software? I'm very very disappointed and irritated for all the time I've lost researching this problem. Still no solution. I'll be taking back the printer tomorrow.

nipood-- can you scan wirelessly with this printer from Vista's scan and fax, or does the printer require that you be connected to it with USB cable when scanning from Windows Scan/Fax which you said you had working?
parrhesia2-- I'm pretty certain w/Windows Scan/Fax that nipood suggests, you can dial down the resolution resulting in smaller tifs (I've done this with an older model (hp2410) where i had similar issue that by default tifs were larger (higher res) than i wanted.

J6480 Scan Error. I purchased same model 9.15.08. I have Vista Business and encounter same problem with black and white scanning. I wish I had read your message before spending one hour with tech support. They advised uninstall and re-install of software - which i havn't done yet. However I may not waste time with that. Installation of printer and software took an hour if not more. Anyhow, my solution is using the Fax and Scan program that is part of Vista business. The black and white scan does work through that software with the J6480. I may return the product or use Vista Fax and Scan with hope that HP will issue fix in near future. By the way HP addresses this specific issue on their site (support section) but the the updated driver on HP site for this specific problem didn't work as I installed it and continued having same problem. Dissapointed with HP. Will try Canon next time.
