"Fast and efficient multifunction printer."4.0 starson by jimcobber
Pros: Very efficient with ink, large ink cartridges, super easy to change cartridge. Fast print, really spits out B&W text prints. Works OK with Macintosh, Snow leopard has the drivers built in. Very nice web interface with good stats. Scan works well.
Cons: To set the 8500 up properly you really need a Windows machine. Once it's set up, it works well with Mac. I have no idea how to print an envelope, and the directions don't give you a hint. Copy/Scan lid does not stay up.
Summary: The printer function works very well with Macs, output is fast and looks great. Printer has zeroconf (bonjour) so the macs see it straight off. I don't use the fax function, I scan and email. Copy machine function works well, too. The touch screen really makes most tasks very easy, lightyears better than a LCD/Menu system. Where the fun starts is when you want to scan to a network folder. Mac software is no where near as nice as the Windows admin/setup software. The way I wanted it set up is for the scan function to scan directly to a folder located on each Mac. This is doable, but the Mac software can's seem to do to the setup properly, and the Web interface can't seem to do it either. But, if you use a windows machine, it's a piece of cake to set up your Macs, ironically. Once set up, the scan function the best thing on earth in conjunction with the touch screen. Load a pile of papers into the sheet feeder, hit "scan" select network folder, and go. My wifes never been able to figure out my previous MFP's and she can use this one no problem. You can also shove a USB drive into it and scan to that. It's strange that printing to envelopes is not mentioned anywhere, this was a big feature and easy to use. So I use labels, no too big a deal for me. So far no jams at all from the paper bin. The sheet feeder has gotten jammed a couple of times, but due to my error. Another thing I don't understand is why they don't set it up for straight-through scanning for pictures. This would be a great picture scanner if it didn't turn your pics into U's. I'm glad I got this, very happy compared to the Brother unit I had before.
