"It's my Mac not your software? Get Serious."0.5 starson by dan28088
Pros: As a boat anchor it's sleek and shiny - but can't say much for it's scanning
Cons: Won't permit scanning on a Lion or Snow Leopard system at more than 300DPI. HP's solution is to uninstall and reinstall the software - like playing a slot machine - and see what you get.
Summary: From a legacy of OfficeJet systems that worked well and worked nearly forever, I expected this to work too - what a mistake. With both a Mac Pro running Lion and a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard I could not believe that the problem was software - had to be the printer, so I returned it. But the new one did exactly the same thing.
Chatline support walked me through the uninstall and reinstall dance - and once it even seemed to work, but power cycling the systems brought no glory and I could not even connect - so uninstall and reinstall once again. Even the FORCE level uninstall to purge everything did not improve.
So several hours spent with chat and uninstalling and reinstalling and promises for Escelation that were never fulfilled. Then another chat session with apology for the failure to properly escalate and yet another case number - three days later still no contact.
Calling HP was interesting, the first few people were sincerely apologetic, but the last one was not quite so much. Her view was that they have seen this but don't know why - and it must be my systems.
Both my systems are totally up to date, and there are no errors or issues of any apparent nature. The old scanner that died had no problem with 4800 DPI, so I do not accept that my systems have some setting that is limiting them to only 300.
Telling me that they are busy is also unacceptable. I have been working to get help and resolution since the last week of December.
Two different Macs running up to date but different operating systems are both failing. I can and will bring in a third if not a fourth Mac this evening - but suspect the results to be identical in frustration.
This is NOT a Mac issue and it is insulting to be told that it is not their problem and that they can offer no real help or support other than to ask around.
You can google OfficeJet 8600 problem scanning 300 DPI and you will get a slue of responses. This is not an isolated problem or a recent problem. Very sad and unfortunate to see it through back at me as if I am somehow to blame - for what, buying an HP product and expecting that it will work?
Very very frustrating....
