"A big disappointment"1.0 starson by Puddock
Pros: Looks great. Does duplex printing, photo printing and is wireless.
Cons: The touch screen works only intermittently, often the wireless connection does not work, the printing quality is okay but not dazzling AND the print cartirdges run out VERY quickly.
Summary: I previously owned a wonderful HP printer which was pretty basic, I guess. It did duplex printing but that was its only add-on feature. It was a fantastic workhorse in my home office, producing bulk quantities of intricate catalogues and high quality photographs equally happily. I used it without a hitch for eight years. So when I bought a new PC which wouldn't interact with it, I sadly put it away but had no hesitation in turning to HP to provide the new printer. I looked around for a few days. Things had certainly moved on in eight years. I decided on a fairly expensive printer that did everything I could possibly want and more, and maybe that was the problem. There is a sense with this printer that HP have simply tried to squeeze in too much, although that is by no means an excuse for the problems I have had.
The first printer I bought did not work. A technical glitch meant that it simply would not print. I took it back and brought another one home. Not a good start but, nevertheless, I was excited by all its features - it did duplex, of course, but it also had a separate photo printing facility, and it was wireless.
I have had little but disappointment with it since the day I brought it home and finally got it working. The wireless facility does not always activiate properly and, I would say about once in every five times that I switch it on and it goes through its lengthy start up procedure (go and make a cup of tea while you're waiting), it does not work and I have to reset it and start all over again. When you just want to print off a quick letter or an internet page, this is very frustrating.
The touch screen does not work reliably either, especially at the bottom of the screen, which is a particular problem as that's usually where the OK button is. I can be standing there trying to keep the blood pressure down for many seconds, trying to find the sweet spot that actually works.
The thing that's made me most angry, though, and what has got me writing this review, is that the print cartirdges last hardly any time at all. I've just run out of ink again and I it hardly seems any time since I put the last one in. I should say also that you get no warning that the ink is running out. I know with the old printers we used to be driven mad with the warnings that flashed up every time you used the printer but with this machine you get no warning at all and, in fact, you don't know there's a problem until you collect your printed sheets and discover that only half of the colours have been printing - not good when you've done a big run.
That's about it. I am faced with another huge bill for inks this morning, having run out, unexpectedly and without warning, last night. But I am also looking for another printer - one that will do the jobs I require efficiently and without fuss. Sadly, it will not be from HP.
