"Great home scanner/printer"
Pros: Great scanning and printing. It's nice to be able to send faxes with out using a fax modem or software on the PC.
Cons: Uses more ink than I like. Has a tendancy to mess up on the paper feed causing double printing for a line or two.
Summary: My old printer (which still works) is a Canon BJC-4200 Photo which I paid $170 for. My old scanner, a Mustek costing me $120, which quit on me which is why I went shopping. I originally started look for a new scanner, but after my brother suggested I look at the All-in-One Printers I began to realize that I could update both and resolve an old problem I've had with using my PC to send and recieve faxes. I stumbled across the Lexmark X5470m at Walmart and was impressed by what I saw. The price of $90 was also impressive so I bought one. Since I haven't used any of the other All-in-One Printers on the market, I don't know how they compare quality or performance wise. But none of them compare price wise to the Lexmark X5470. For my purposes, I find that this device does everything that my old equipment did. Only it does it better, faster, and for less money with the following exception. The Lexmark X5470 ink cartridges either don't come with as much ink as my old Canon ink cartridges or the Lexmark is putting more ink on the paper because it goes through ink cartridges much faster. For example a BC-20 black ink cartridge for my Canon BJC-4200 printing text at normal resolution will print about 700 sheets of full page text. The #32 black ink cartridge for the Lexmark appears to print about 100 to 200 pages. I picked up the High Yield Black #34 and Color #35 cartridges for the Lexmark this week to replace the #32 Black and #33 Color when then run out. Lexmark claims that the High Yield cartridges will last more than twice as long. If that's true, that will put them in the same category with the Canon print cartridges for price.Updated
I've noticed some of the praise and complaints for the this printer since I first reported on mine. I never have paper jams, but then I learned long ago that you can not use copy paper in any inkjet printer. You must use paper designed for inkjet printers or you will get jams. I've haven't had problems with with the software at all other than I took me a while to learn how to get the fax from computer to work. Faxing with out the printer has always worked fine. Print quality is dependent on the print and paper settings. Draft is just that, for printing drafts. Low ink usage, lite fast printing. Normal works for most common printing. Changing paper mode from plain or auto to Heavy Weight Matt gets rid of the thin lines that run though the printing, but uses more ink and is slower. I don't recommend using any ink other than the High Yield Cartridges. The standard cartridges are too expensive for what you get. Am I still happy with this printer, yes I am. I would not use it for professional looking quality printing though. If that is what you are looking for, I suggest a Laser Printer. This is a general purpose printer only.Updated
I've tried twice to right updates on my review of the Lexmark X5470 printer that I bought.
There is something wrong with the review editor and it will not allow me to post a second review. The people at C-Net need to get this problem fixed.Updated
Yes I am.
I have put it through it's paces and the only real problems I've run into is the thin lines or streak through the print out and faxing from the computer.
The streaks are easily fixed by changing the paper mode from plain to Heavy Matt. Unfortunately this uses more ink also so I only use this mode when I want the best possible print outs. This problem doesn't show up during photo mode printing.
I had a problem with getting the software to accept my phone number inputs from the computer for faxing. This is a bug is their software and Lexmark has been told about this. Lexmark's support could be improved as they don't seem to understand or don't want to understand any problem beyond the basic ones.
I don't have paper jams, but then I don't use anything other than Inkjet Printer Paper. I learned long ago that cheaper papers will jam most printers. Never use copier paper!
