"Great All-in-One, REALLY duff software drivers!"
Pros: Well-built and sturdy, good quality plastics used. Easy user interface. Quick to scan and print and good quality. Fax is efficient and reliable. Multitasking is A+
Cons: Using the TWAIN or WIA drivers to scan is a BIG NO NO! Both drivers crash repeatedly; ADF doesn't work properly.
Summary: With more than 5 years experience as an IT professional and 20 years experience with PCs generally, I have long been a loyal supporter of HP laser printers and Epson inkjects, and I have never been a big fan of Lexmark.
However in the X7170 they have truly come to the party with a really excellent machine which I would easily give an 8 out of 10 rating if it wasn't for the fact that the driver software is so unstable and erratic that it makes all but the most basic use of the machine (i.e. printing!) almost completely useless. Even when not using the bundled 'productivity suite' - scanning into Acrobat using the TWAIN or WIA drivers for example, the drivers crash about 80% of the time.
Another REALLY annoying thing is that Lexmark don't tell you that you CANNOT uninstall the printer drivers through the conventional ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in the Control Panel - doing so corrupts the registry and WILL give you a system-halting blue screen of death when next you reboot!
The fact that Lexmark Tech Support are not too interested in actually providing support as expediently as possible to their forlorn customers (i had to email them twice, and call them 3 times before I got any assistance) AND they make as if they don't know that their driver software is duff makes me angry - and makes me feel that this machine would be marvellous if backed up with good tech support and if you could operate it directly from its control panel and not have to deal with their buggy software at all!
Sadly, I must give this functionally excellent machine a thumbs down because of poor tech support on their dismal software.

I have two of them and i have them installed with NO issues. Im not sure why these "Experts" any problems. And i have called the tech support and how no problem getting a hold of them to get there extended warranty, and to answer some of my Questions.
Who ever has had problems with software are one of those people that think they know "To Much".
Great Printer -
It took a many tries to finally install the software without it crashing on me mid-install. Then, when the All-In-One software tried to run it's initial set-up; it kept crashing. Two days later, weirdly enough, the software runs OK. But, it's still bloated.
