    "Crayons Are Better Than This"

by potasnik on March 31, 2008

Pros: Small enough that you won't get tired when you have to ship it back.

Cons: Breaks down more than a mourner at a funeral.

Summary: I have had four (4) Lexmark z1420 printers. Two were replaced because the plastic cartridge guide came off and it can't be fixed, and two because the wi-fi did not work. I am awaiting delivery of #4's replacement. This has been since October, 2007! Incredible. They have very good customer service - real friendly and everything. But beware...if you buy this printer, put their customer service number on speed dial. I have bought printers since 1983, and this is by far the least reliable one I've owned.

Also, the printer fails to communicate with the computer every once in a while. It is no biggie for me until my wife starts giving me the hairy eyeball about not being to print out something.

I bought this because our new computer is totally wireless and I wanted the printer to be as well. I think I'd opt for a wired printer if I knew from the start that life would take such a reckless turn. Just remember...I told you so!

I agree wholeheartedly. I bought this computer for work, and I dont want to ask my boss for more money for another printer, so I deal with it. However, if I owned this printer at home, I would splash it with holy water and burn it in the fireplace. It is the worst printer I have EVER owned. This includes a half-dozen of the early SLOW HP printers. I would take any of them over this thing. It always seems to get "lost" from my computer, I constantly have to try each USB plug on my computer until it finds one that it likes. Also, Lexmark would have you buy ink every week if they thought you were dumb enough. After I'd printed maybe 20-25 pages, it was dinging and telling me to order ink. I've since been using the same cartridge for 3 months, though you have to bypass the "buy new ink" screen every time you want to print something. Avoid this, and I suspect all Lexmark products, like the plague.

Did your issue(s) ever get resolved? I think I have a defective printer, as well. My USB port on the unit is loose and will not make a good connection and I think the wireless adapter is a DUD! Did you have to pay for shipping the defective units back? How long did you have to wait for the replacement units to be sent to you?
