"Drinks Ink like a drunk"
Pros: Fast. Good quality printing.
Cons: Uses an enormous amount of ink. One cartridge is only good for about 30 sheets of paper. Even if only one cartridge is empty, the printer will shut down completely.

I had the same problem... the ink usage was horrendous. Eventually, Brother released a firmware upgrade (go to the brother website).
I downloaded this update and installed it (following the included instructions) and the change made a huge improvement in the printer's ink usage.
Now don't get me wrong. The printer still uses ink... and I think that it uses some ink even if you don't use the printer... (occasionally, I think it pumps some ink through the heads to try to keep the print heads clear -- and I guess that this somehow uses ink) but the firmware update made a huge difference. I went from planning to throw out the printer because of it's high ink usage, to finding it acceptable enough to keep and use the printer for several years before I decided to get a laser printer/copier/fax instead. -
Can confirm this expensive issue.
The printer cleans its ink-mechanism during the day, each time it "drinks" a little from each of the 4 cardridge. When you are sleeping, downtown, on holidays, 12 months a year.
DONT BUY THIS PRINTER ! -
I used the printer twice, didn't use it for a month, and now that I am trying to print, two of three of the colors have gotten clogged, only allowing me to print magenta. I've reprinted twice using magenta only, and in the process of trying to unclog the other three colors, now magenta is out, and lo and behold, it won't let me print at all unless you put in a new magenta cartridge. Biggest waste of money you could possibly get.

Don't even think about buying aftermarket or so called comparable inks or cartridges. They will ruin this unit. Use only Genuine LC41 cartridges from Brother. I tried the alternative cartridges due to the high consuption.

I have never once had a problem with mine and I print LOTS of photos.
I have printed over 400 on a set of cartirdges. -
I inherited this printer/fax/scanner and the quality is fine. I would never buy it, because it eats ink like crazy. I have had multiple HP printers and NEVER went through cartridges of ink this fast. I go through these in 2 weeks and I don't even print photos, just internet pages with color. Cost you $100 in ink every few weeks.
