"Brother has handed us a likeable prototype with issues"2.5 starson by rogermanawatu
Pros: Well. it looks swish, like something out of Star Trek, and it has this neat thing where it can print the A3 paper
Quite cheap for all these features
Very compact Automatic Doc Feed ADF, and this works very well.
Cons: Wizz whirr BANG, pause wir tick tick tick Crash zip zip zip zip swish and Out IT COMES! onto the floor. I miss my Canon...wah wah.
Lots of paper jams on simple A4 printing.
Summary: Yeah I like it, but it is clunky despite the swish appearance. The touch screen is good, and intuitive and can create user designed shortcuts to particular printing options, eg fast double sided left margin stapling.
Because of the funny Landscape orientation for basic A4 printing from the paper cassette (allowing Portrait A3) getting the orientation right for Photo printing is a constant balls up first time round, even after 2 months. This part in not well thought through, even though the engineers knew what they were doing, the software people can't help you predict whats going to happen.
My wife has to get me everyday to fix something, eg sometimes the scanner is not clicked down properly, or it doesn't recognise its own cartridges, or its saying they are empty when still half full. this is a known issue with Brothers. ONE GOOD TIP: out a small strip of tape over the ink level window on the cartridge,to fool the printer into reading it as always half full. Then change it when that colour starts to fade on the page. Get out all the ink you paid for!!
I think I miss the Canon because they do all things well, especially the photo printing fine definition. Using cheap glossy paper with this give poor definition, but it comes back noticeably with good photo paper.
I don't want to cut Brother up for this machine, but I want them to improve its accurate handling of paper, not so many fumbles, make it so you know the Image is going to be in the same orientation as the paper despite the sideways feeding, and I think the photo printing software should offer more settings to improve print quality, cropping margin. Eg I notice that the cropping I chose is not what you get, it give you more of the image than you want!?
