Pros The print quality is great sharp and crisp. Fantastic scanner. Easy to operate. Prints on any size paper I've put in it.
Cons Very poorly designed software, forces you to buy toner you don't need and it's loud.
Summary I love the print quality and features. I would not buy this printer again and I do not recommend it. When the black toner cartridge indicated it was low I replaced it at a cost of 48.99. Then the display told me that all of the other cartridges were low and it would not print anything until they were replaced. I have not printed any color pages so I knew that the cartridges were full. I have no intention of spending $146.97 to replace full toner cartridges every time one cartridge is low. Paper jams every 50 sheets or so but it's easy to clear the paper out of the machine. The printer starts up when not in use and is very noisy. It doesn't print anything while it's making it's noise, I have no idea what it's doing.
Pros Print quality decent ... would fit the job for a SOHO environment if the dam drivers would work.
Cons Software is bloated and doesn't even work. Didn't realize how bad it was till I tried to find an update online and found all the other complaints about the printer right on the HP support forum with no response from HP to any of the issues.
Summary This printer has pissed me off for the last time. It worked fine with XP and still works through my Mac, but I need it for work and to work with my Win7 machine, I'm currently emailing documents to my Mac just to print out documents. The latest firmware updates don't do any good. The printer status reads 'offline' from my PC all the time despite the printer being on ... after turning the printer off and on again and waiting for it to initialize again, then it's good for another page or two from my PC. The printer will want to start calibrating in the middle of the night loud enough to wake me up and if I'm on the phone while it starts to calibrate I just have to turn it off in order to continue with my phone call.
In general I've liked HP products and have not had to deal with their support, but this is just terrible and I will never buy another HP.
Pros quality prints, good scanner with lots of cool features
Cons i had to contact tech support and it was the most painful experience I've ever had with a tech company. Next printer won't be an HP
Pros The print quality is very good; making some pictures even better than the original. Sometimes, depending on what your doing, you can multitask with this printer. I love the scan to memory card function. Scanning works perfectly.
Cons The near daily color calibration is annoying; especially in a bedroom setting. It may calibrate at 2:30 AM! But you can change it weekly. Fax only works at medium and slow speeds. Strange Mac printing driver.
Summary The best thing about this printer is its printing quality. Everything looks very glossy; a magazine like quality on plain paper. But interestingly when printing on a Mac, by default the Mac chooses "ColorSync", instead of "In Printer" for color matching. The "In Printer" does a better job in converting the colors. Setup for the PC (to me) is much easier than the Mac. Just insert the cd and install using custom settings. When I don't want to install HP additional software, I just choose to install a local printer using TCP ports and Windows will automatically browse for the driver in the cd. And on the PC, you can choose to default to black and white printing via printer preferences in the printing shortcuts menu.
On the Mac, the cd provided didn't work. I had to go to HP website to download the software. I really like the HP Director Scanning utility. You can load the automatic document feeder and scan everything to one PDF.
You can choose override and continue on black; but it's not set by default. I also changed the threshold till out to 1, instead of the default of 15 pages. Thus I can continue to print on 0% toner cartridges. Using my kitchen scale a new toner weighs about 571 grams. A truly dead toner (uneven color through the page) is around 548 grams. When the printer claims that its out of ink, it weighs about 557grams. So HP does a great at lying. You can typically find the toners at a reasonable price on amazon.com; but if you go to Office Depot or Staples, your paying a lot for it. Your looking at ~$0.46 per color print (at 15% coverage each color). I turn off the ink alerts on my PCs. The Mac cares less of its status, but you can still see it. But it is a bit slow at printing... [I don't think its noisy]
The colors that it can reproduce is worse than my old HP Deskjet printer, but I think its the best colors your can find (at this price) for a laser printer. But as I said, the quality is still great. So photos on plain paper looks great. But photos on HP Color Laser 160g Photo paper looks bad. Photos looks darker than usual on their photo paper. My favorite is still to have my pictures professionally printed on Kodak paper. But you can probably wow people with your boring power point handouts.
The scanning function is the best. The lamp doesn't need to warm up and it works! (Which is odd with HP products.) Manual duplex works oddly on a mac, but you can find a fix for that online. Google "HP CM1312 Series Printer Mac OS X Manual Duplex Issue and Fix". If you download Apple's latest HP driver update (for snow leopard) it will replace the duplex fix. This is when time machine comes in handy.
Pros It has copy, scan and fax functions as well as print, all of which I need for my home office. Some of the time the print quality is good.
Cons The paper feeder jams frequently, the control panel is confusing, cartridges are way too expensive, it has to be "calibrated" or "cleaned" far too often, it is the most temperamental machine I ever have used, color registry often is terrible.
Summary I pretty much summed it up in my "don't like" comments. I've used computers and printers for almost 30 years and this is without doubt the very worst product I ever have had. I seriously doubt I ever will buy another HP product and that's too bad; it used to be a good company.
