"3 units: 3 dead faxmodems"
1.0 starson by taylorwPros: wireless (Mac and XP links); capacity; all features
Cons: bad fax hardware
Summary: We're about to return our 3rd 7410 in a week. Each machine supported wireless printing (Mac OS 10.3 VERY EASY to set up: XP a nightmare, needing specialist to find proper IP address). Each machine also showed same modem-based error message. HP tech support: a) came on the line quickly, b) identified the problem as bad firmware: each unit had to be replaced. These units came from 3 Staples stores about 20 miles apart, so an entire batch is probably bad. Last HP tech support offered to send a new unit, but the 7 biz days and the first reviews here discouraged us. We're off to try something else. I'd agree with the recommendation to wait 6 months on this puppy.

I read all the previous comments noting most were from early in 05 and assumed those problems would have been solved by now. Wrong.

I purchased a 7410 from Comp USA this morning and could not get past an error message saying the ink cartridges were installed incorrectly. A half hour or so on the phone with HP’s tech support, who were more interested in following their “upgrade my printer with a new one” script (never mind I called because I had just bought a new one) than they were with fixing my problem, and it was back to Comp USA. They inserted new cartridges with the same error message and then swapped my two hour old printer for a new one. Got it back to the office, put it together with the same error message result. So just a moment or so to write this before loading it all up and taking it back for a refund.

As an aside, I was in Fry’s last night and noticed they had a stack of 7410’s for $399 which is still higher than the post rebate price for new. It took a moment or two to then notice these were all refurbished.

All of this coupled with the majority of negative comments regarding 7410’s that are posted on CNet and I conclude HP has a major problem with this printer. It even feels more cheaply made than earlier HP’s; which is not a surprise given the trend toward cheap, cheap, cheap for all CE/tech products (much of that is our fault for not being willing to pay for higher quality.)

Not sure what I will do now. This all started because our 3 year old 7110 was sucking in multiple sheets of paper when printing checks or labels. Comp USA said it would cost more to fix then to buy a new one and with the additional features such as wireless, I thought why not. Now I know. I think I will call HP once more to ask for Canon’s number.

I replaced a 2-1/2 year old HP d145 with the 7410 because the ADF on the d145 was malfunctioning. The ADF on on the 7410 was slow (slower than the older model d145) and skipped pages (not double feed, just missed scanning them). I rely heavily on faxing and the page count must be exact. The 7410 would take in 10 pages but only scan 8. Not a good unit for a home based business. After 7 days, the unit went back - no regrets!
