Pros Great Features, Low Buck
Cons Constant Driver Problems
Summary This photo printer comes out of the box with bold promises. So far I've had nothing but problems. The scanner preforms remarkably with excellent pictures on the screen, but the printing leaves alot to be desired. The pictures come out grainy. Also I've had problems with the software, everytime I try to use it I get error messages and a que to repair software, which leads to the same problems. For $120 I could buy film developing for a year. I'm going to try to reinstall the drivers, I'll drop a line thenUpdated
I reinstalled the software and I couldn't be more pleased. The printing has gone without any problems. Besides the reinstallation headaches, this is the best printer ever.
Pros low ink price - cost
Cons slow to start, firmware renders ink tanks useless
Summary when you can get it to print, it will print multiple pages quickly, and at a low ink price. After firmware upgrade, takes 37 seconds to start.
Will scan direct to PDF, handy
Support is HORRIBLE, 60 minutes plus hold time. Have replaced 3 units now with promise of "free" ink since the "flash" ruined the ink tanks that I "had", have NOT received any ink tanks.
Bloated software, I mean really, burn DVD's with my printer? I don't think so...
Company admits "emergency" meetings about problems with this unit.
Don't be fooled by the low ink price, it's not worth the frustration
Pros Very low ink costs, well made unit, fast, good print quality.
Cons It's pretty big, so you'll need plenty of desk space.
Summary I almost let the first review on this site discourage me. But I found several other reviews from people who were quite happy with the 5100. Between the anticipated 50% savings in ink and a very nice discount offered by Kodak through September, this was enough to get me to take a chance. I am glad I did. The 5100 is an impressive unit, prints very good 5 x 7 and 8 x 10 color pictures (which is mostly what I do), and is much faster than my older HP printer. I am very happy with my purchase. If the units holds up well, the greatly reduced ink costs are going to make this a popular product line once word gets out.
Pros Great price on ink, and great quality
Cons Out of the box software nothing but problems
Summary I got this computer, for the annual family calendar project. The thought of saving that much on ink sold me. I installed and hooked it up, and got error messages, and it would scan but not print. It said that it was not communicating, but it was. I spent an hour on the phone with tech support, removing the software, and printer, and reinstalling, using the "web" option, that is supposed to install the latest version of the software. Now the printer printed, but still gave the communication error. Good enough, it was doing what I needed it to do.. until the next time I try to print. Back to step one, it will scan but not print. I attempted the same process, that tech support took me through, removing the software and the printer, this time the install failed. It gave me a support site, that gave me yet another updated version of the Easy Share software, and an updated driver. It is all good now, I think part of the problem was with my mp3 player, because I could not sync it, while the printer was turned on, during the first couple of attempts. At this point, it is all good, I printed out over 120 8 1/2 X 11 calendar pages, with photos, at best quality, and about 30 4X6 photo cards, and it has only used 1 1/2 color cartridges, and the black cartridge is still about 75% full. It was tough getting there, but now I'm very happy with the printer! Get the latest software, and firmware!
Pros Cheap refill for ink only. You do not get a new print head with each new cartridge purchase.
Cons It never worked
Summary I ordered the Kodak 5100 as a gift for my father. After using the machine for one month, the print head broke. He called customer service who sent another print head and replacement ink. Enticed by a sale price, I bought one for myself last week and spent two hours trying to set it up. I worked through a series of steps with customer service the next day and it was determined that the flashing orange light meant that the machine would never work. I was told to return it to the store. I will be purchasing the Canon MP530.
