A recording studio can be daunting; the mass of knobs, cables, and audio gear associated with music production makes even the most modest project studio intimidating and expensive. Happily, you can ditch all that junk and just use Reason. This program from Propellerhead Software is a virtual audio studio that simulates everything from mixers to synthesizers. Plus, it does so with such ease and aplomb that we recommend this app for nearly every music lover. Reason's quality stands up to the demands of all but the most professional composers, and if you don't have the space or the cash for a full studio, Reason is an impressive alternative.

Makes its own music
Reason is not a standard digital audio and MIDI-sequencing program, as Cakewalk Sonar is; instead, you use MIDI technology to create notes, and Reason simulates the instruments you need to play back those sounds. You then process, mix, and output the sounds through your speakers or save them to your hard disk as a WAV or MP3 file. Since you create all your sound within Reason, the only external hardware you need is a moderately fast computer and a MIDI interface and keyboard or a sound card. This keeps your cost and clutter to a minimum, since you don't need an external audio mixer, for example.

CPU-powered studio
The software offers 16 modules stacked atop each other in the interface, all of which emulate traditional studio equipment. This setup isn't the ultimate in user interface design, but it faithfully mimics what you'd find in a recording studio. You'll find a virtual mixer (complete with sliders) and eight different audio-processing modules, which range from a digital reverb to a two-band parametric equalizer. Of course, every studio needs instruments. Reason offers four simulated modules, including an analog synthesizer, a sample playback module, a loop playback module, and a drum machine. You can always add more; just go to the Create menu and choose a new module. You can, for example, throw in a synthesizer for a bass line, a separate module for playing back a string part, or a delay unit to add echo to the bass line synthesizer. We found Reason's audio quality outstanding, even compared to a standalone synthesizer.

Reason's power depends almost solely on your CPU; the faster your computer, the more modules you can add. Happily, Reason is also extremely frugal with CPU resources. On a 400MHz G4 Macintosh, we created a composition that used 19 separate instrument modules, 9 effects modules, and two mixers--all at once--without a hitch.

Sounds within Reason
If you're used to creating a musical track using a MIDI sequencer, Reason holds no surprises; just select a track, hit Record, and perform the part on a MIDI keyboard. The essential difference between Reason and a standalone synthesizer is that once the MIDI part is captured, the resulting sound doesn't come from your keyboard. Reason itself generates the sound. However, playback is somewhat different than with an external MIDI synthesizer. Because the program has to create, then output the sound, you'll hear a slight pause, or latency, between when you press a key on the MIDI keyboard and when the program plays that note. The latency takes a bit of getting used to, but you can adjust your settings so that the pause is barely noticeable.

Once you've added all the parts to your piece, you can save a complete file that includes mix settings such as the volume, equalization, the left and right pan of each track, and the percentage of added effect on all modules. This is where Reason shines over a traditional studio: if you want to edit a specific element of the file, you don't have to rerecord a whole track. You can lower the sound of the drums, add some reverb, or equalize a guitar just by pressing Record and reworking the mix to your heart's content. Reason will remember all of the sounds, automation, and other critical data every time you open the file.

Minor drawbacks
Like any audio studio package, Reason isn't perfect for every user. You can't easily write complex music that requires multiple meters or tempo changes; Reason's MIDI-sequencing capabilities are just not as robust as those in other professional MIDI sequencers such as Cakewalk Sonar or Mark of the Unicorn Digital Performer. Also, if you already have outboard gear and want to add digital audio tracks, such as a vocal or acoustic guitar recording, Reason isn't your best option.

It's a hit
However, using only Reason, a MIDI keyboard, and your computer, you can create, arrange, and mix pop and dance music that sounds like it came out of a professional studio. For professional musicians, Reason offers sophisticated output routing and MIDI-syncing capabilities, so you can add Reason's instruments and audio-processing modules to your current setup. For beginners who know their way around musical instruments, Reason provides access to high-end audio gear at a fraction of the cost of real audio equipment. With its excellent sound quality, rock-solid features, and low price ($399, compared with thousands of dollars for a working studio), Reason offers anyone access to professional-quality music gear.

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!!

Pros: Can't tell anyone enough... I play in a rock band and use Reason on virtually everything. Not only intended for techno/trance/hip-hop but also for rock/punk/hardcore/metal/ I could go on and on.......

Cons: Still can't use the Vocoder.

This is great product

Pros:

Cons:

Review: If you want to get everything out of reason you need to combine it with other programs. Just record the reason songs to another program (i use magix), then you can add vocals, change tempo, add digital tracks, etc. If you are just using Reason then you need to get another program to combine it with.

A Great Software Gets Even Better

Pros:

Cons:

Review: With Reason you have your console, your patch bay, you have everything you need to crank out hits. It's even better if used in combination with Ableton Live. Also if you're a register user the Reason 2.5 upgrade is free. So a great product gets even better.

I like it a lot

Pros:

Cons:

Review: No it does not let you record or edit audio. But that's like getting mad that a coffeemaker doesn't make toast. So along with Reason, you might want to get Cool Edit Pro and possibly Recycle as well if you like Rex loops. But even then, you'll be off *much* cheaper than when you buy the actual studio gear. Reason undeniably is great value for money. It's easy to use, yet flexible. Intuitive interface, interesting wiring possibilities, and with the available refills you have enough variation in samples. It does have limitations, but it does what it's meant to do extremely well. It has never crashed on me, doesn't use many system resources, and even with a $25 sound card the latency is acceptable for most things.

It's ok...better with Cubase tho

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I've been a loyal Reason user since v1.0 came out...but then I started to feel limited by it's synths, effects and so on...now I use it with Cubase VST with VST instruments, VST effects and so on...and to be perfectly honest..I've not had the need to go back into Reason for a while...But it works very well..more ideally suited to newbie musicians instead of the serious musician...

Almost the best

Pros:

Cons:

Review: An excellent product for composing music. There could be in the future something like Reasonable Impulse Tracker 3.0 in which tracking would replace a part of Reason's modularity.

The Best. Period.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Common guys... Not flexable? Cannot easily change tempos? "Close solution"? No Dxi instrument support? No audio tracks? Well, let's think about it together. Can it work with your existing sequencer/audio package? -- Yes. Is your sequencer VST/DXi friendly? Yes, probable. Can you record audio tracks/make tempo changes in your sequencer? Yes. Will it be PERFECTLY synchronized with Reason? -- yes again. Now, why do we need to ask questions like "How come it doesn't chop the liver???"--it is NOT designed (and not claming that either) to do so. On top of everything -- try to do a very simple test: create a very buisy tune with tons of synths, samplers, automated filters, sliders etc. Play it. Open task manager or something similar. Watch CPU usage... CPU is hardly under the pressure -- pure example of pretty darn smart programming, in my opinion.

Reason is next-gen audio production

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Reason is responsible for converting thousands of music fans to musicians. For that reason alone (no pun intended) Reason deserves recognition as a serious musical tool. It's the easiest sequencing/synth program I've ever come across. And if you're looking for greater flexibility, though it's expensive, you can hook Reason up with other programs such as Nuendo for flawless integration of DirectX Plugins and the like. Hands down the most exciting music creation software to hit the electronic music scene.

JUST LIKE STUDIO

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It's nice having a program on computer that is just like the real thing. The guys at propeller head make it just like the actual equipment you are using wich is good for a guy like me who knows his way around those things.

One of your best choices soon to get better!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: All right, the only bad reviews I have seen address these issues: no ability to use custom effects, not very flexible synth, no broad support samples available. Well version 2.0 (due out by April) promises support for SoundFonts and other complex samples with a new velocity-layering sampler. A new synth module is available with granular synthesis, which sounds just beautiful. As for extra effects and other software...CakeWalk's next version features tight integration with Reason, not to mention the fact that with ReWire, you've always had the ability to use VST/Cubase effects in Reason.

Alone in its class

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Despite the limitations others have mentioned, there's no question that this is the only software that is this flexible and complete. It does need a means to incorporate external audio input, and more flexibility in it's sequencing would be nice. If it had plug-in support, I'd marry it! Bottom line: Best $300 I've ever spent!

Close solution.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Reason has an excellent quality: ture; but it looks more a studio simulator then a music tool to create music. What is missing, above everything, is the openness that should be the requirement number one of music software today. No DirectX Plugin support (you are stuck with the effects they provide you, and what they provide you is really basic) No DXi Instrument support or any other open standard support. The samplers and synth are included in reason have outstanding quality for what they implement, but have not even the half of the features than the same type of instruments in Fruityloops, for example. The sampler can not edit samples, can only play them. Bottom line: if I had to buy one only music software, I wouldn't use my money for such a quality with such a little flexibility.

Excellent Music Creation Software

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Reason gives you everything you'd expect to use in a regular studio and puts all into your PC. You can even spin the virtual rack around and rewire the components! Reason is not intended to be an audio/track editor like cakewalk. It's more like an instrument giving you analog synths, drum machines, sequencers, rythm generators and effects units. A totally awsome product!!

You get what you pay for.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Some of the most important features of a computer based music application are missing! Better to stick with the industry standards like cakewalk or cubase. Personaly, I think the best program for people looking to get into computer based music production is acid music pro form sonic foundry. 1) It has all the features necessary in any respectable app and 2) it has more ROYALTY FREE loops available than any other app out there right now. This means that you can make music without having to payoff the ******* company who made the program(cough cough like voyetra)

A complete studio, and cross-platform

Pros:

Cons:

Review: A complete solution for putting together complex techno tracks, and more. The Mac version is somewhat more refined and takes advantage of the g4 Altivec instructions, but both versions are very solid. While it lacks audio recording, it does interface via ReWire to other sequencers.
