So now that you have a video iPod, how do you load videos on it? There's the iTunes Music Store and Google Video, but what about content from DVDs you already own? SlySoft's iPod, the Sony PSP, and other portable devices. The downside--and it's a big one--is that it doesn't work with copy-protected DVDs. (The HandBrake Lite utility does, however.)

CloneDVD Mobile sells for a steep $39, although there's a generous 21-day trial, so you can make sure that you can't live without it before you put up your money. The interface is clearly laid out and walks you through the few necessary steps. You select your device, choose your DVD, and tell the program where to save the results.

In CloneDVD Mobile's opening screen, you select where you'll be loading the finished video so that the app can put it in the correct format.

The interface has a few confusing gotchas the first time you use it. The first time, it didn't detect our test DVD automatically; we had to tell it to look in the E: drive. The pull-down menu didn't even list E: as an option, so we had to type it in. Once we did, though, it was able to see the loaded DVD for that and all future sessions.

The Save options are also a bit confusing. At first, it looks as if you only need to type in the name of the file you're saving, but you actually need to press the Browse button next to the text field to first decide where you want it saved. After you've run the program once, the text field is automatically filled in with the last saved location.

Once it's working, CloneDVD Mobile is a fast performer and makes attractively small files with good resolution. We wish it could copy commercial DVDs, but Hollywood isn't about to let that happen.

Encodes into many different formats

Pros: many formats, excellent quality

Cons: a little confusing at first, documentation could be better

Review: I have been using the program for a few weeks now and have encoded at least a dozen movies with it into a format for my iPod. I have had no problems with sound or video quality. If you have a widescreen movie, the program can cut the sides and enlarge the video for the iPod. It can also change the size and quality of the video. The program also features creating video for a dozen or so other devices.

The only drawback of the device is that it is a little tricky to master at first. I tried my first film 3 times to get the quality and size I wanted. The documentation is lacking and needs to be a little more user friendly.

Great if you don't mind Audio out of Sync

Pros: Video quality and speed

Cons: Audio doesn't match Screen

Review: They seem to be having a lot of problems which can be seen from just reading their message board, especially this one

http://forum.slysoft.com/showthread.php?t=340

they are having big problems with the audio sync, which means that when you play back the video that was encoded the audio is delayed a second or more. I paid for this program and now have written off the money since they never give refunds. The company continues to insist on not being able to figure out what the problem is no matter how much information people give. So I am going to stay away from this program for a while because I don't want to buy a product which promises to do something and doesn't deliver again.

Best of the products I've tested

Pros: Works reliably and quickly

Cons: It would be nice if it could read an ISO file directly and then process in a batch mode.

Review: During the past few weeks I've been searching for a reliable way to move copies of my DVDs to an Archos 504. I've tested a handful of products and CloneDVD Mobile inconjuction with AnyDVD is the best of the lot.

Very solid product and well worth the money.

Does what it says

Pros: Rips excellent quality small versions for iPODs etc

Cons: Needs unlocking software (AnyDVD) to rip protected disks

Review: Used in conjuntion with AnyDVD, CloneDVDMobile is easy to use and fast. Rips any DVD to one of various mobile formats, sadly NOT WMV, but I'm hoping this will follow.

Recently Amazing

Pros: Does just about EVERYTHING now and does it RIGHT

Cons: Nothing at all now

Review: Recently Slysoft has updated its software with new features. Automatically zooms and crops to fit whatever size screen your mobile device is.
Fast and never fails.. Their whole package is worth the purchase. High quality stuff!

Not Bad... Jury is still out

Pros: When its good its good..

Cons: not sure if its worth shelling the cash

Review: followed the other guys advice, and downloaded DVD43 or whatever. works like a charm boacking up 1st season of lost to my PVP. first movie i backed up, it worked fine. every feature movie i tried to back up after that failed miserably. i get a "run time error" half way through. not sure where the break down is happening, maybe there is some internal logic built into clonedvd that limits the size of the rip while in trial mode, or maybe dvd43 can't keep up on longer features. i'll post a comment after some further use.

Okay nothing special

Pros: converts video directly from dvd to ipod

Cons: the audio is off by about 1 sec everytime i watch a movie

Review: I thought it was ok except for the fact that whenever i would convert a dvd the sound was about 1 second late from the picture so it looked like everyone was lip syncing and i have tried it on 2 computers so i know it is not just mine. does anybody have a solution to getting my audio back on track?

great software

Pros: watch movies on your IPOD

Cons: doesnt convert protected disks, but heres how to beat that

Review: the program was a bummer at first. but download DVD43. its decrypts on the fly. put your dvd in the tray. let DVD43 load, then convert as per normal.
