Summary: When I first saw it at Office Depot I thought - wow, that's what I needed. Unfortunately I unpacked it, connected it to my wireless router - Actiontec GT704WGB - to find the signal is actually weakened relatively to the short original antenna. I had it hooked up with the cable provided, but when I thought of connecting the antenna directly to the router - it was not possible. The socket on the antenna itself was too deep to reach the plug side of the router, despite the same fitting type. It is a serious flaw of it. I am sure the cable is adding some attenuation to the signal and some people might be tempted to use it without the base. Well, - it seems it wasn't really designed for that.
All in all - I returned it promptly. I am very disappointed. I wish this thing worked, because I have constant issues with the signal strength, the router is in the living room, the PCs are all over the house and it would really help to have a better antenna or maybe a signal booster.

Summary: I gave an older PC (Dell 2.4 Mhz P4) to a ten year old across the street and hoped she could see my ATT/Yahoo Gateway as their house doesn't have cable or landline internet access. Initially there was no connection at a distance of 200-300 feet and as ATT's Gateway doesn't have a provision for an external antenna (why would they) I tried this unit (meant to go on the DSL wireless modem) to replace the quarter wavelength antenna on the PC's wireless card. Whether it is because this antenna is full wavelength instead of quarter wave or simply because it is raised rather than at ground level, I dont know, but the youngster could now connect to my network from her house and I could see six other wireless access points in the area (with weak signal however). Thus it provided the needed signal strength.
