"Everything I ever wanted" on by banks_37
Pros: All in one, USB expandable
Cons: Cost a lot for the 1TB
Summary: I have an apple tv and a macbook. The problem is all the movies and tv shows ect take up a lot of room. The ATV has a hard drive on it, but not near big enough, so I bought and external hard drive. However, to be able to stream my movies from it the the ATV I have to plug it in every time. It gets old. I HATE wires, and I'm glad that Steve Jobs too. With the TC I can have all the movies ect on the TC and stream them to the ATV. Plus now it doesn't look bad with an external hard drive hooked to the airport extreme base station. In the future though I always know that I can get a usb hub and hook as many hard drives and printers I want to the TC. The 1 TB version I think is way overpriced, but the 500 GB is right on. It's about the same price for that as a cheap external HD and the airport extreme. I think the TC is perfect for the person who hates wires and especially perfect for those with an ATV. As far as breaking down, not worried. The "server grade" HD is supposed to last at least 1 million hours. At that rate is should work for at least 41,666 days, which is over 114 years. I sure that I'll want something else in 10 years, probably less.

"Time Capsule, because it only works for a limited time." on by Kiwisolda
Pros: My time capusle made it very easy to set up and create an extensive wireless network in a two storey concrete house with the support of two Airport Express. The network could run 24/7 and never need a reboot and was incredibly stable.
Cons: I would expect it to last longer than 18 months and when your Time Capsule eventually dies, as it appears many do, they just die. No hard drive, no network and no refund. By all accounts, this is a common fault that Apple has failed to acknowledge.
Summary: Try googling to see how many people have lost their Time Capsule after 18 months.
Would I buy one again? Not unless Apple can acknowledge this devices failings and tell the world what it has actually done to rectify the faults to ensure we don't get taken in again. Not until we receive that acknowledgement should we prop up their share price by reinvesting in another Time Limited Capsule. -
"Does what it is supposed to do." on by dicebier
Pros: Stylish, reliable, compliments entire mac line.
Cons: Data transfer with regards to the hard drive is not as speedy as expected.
Summary: Bottom line...it works as advertised. Recommended setup - use the Time Capsule as a wireless-n router and for time machine backups. If you want to also have a quick external HD, connect a firewire 800 drive to your machine for large libraries that you access often. In other words, take only as prescribed.

"My worst tech purchase ever" on by mikieman21
Pros: size, esthetics
Cons: 4/4 did not work!
Summary: I first purchased the 500GB model I followed the instructions to the letter but could not get it to work as a router. It never made a web connection. No worries, as I already had a w/l g router so decided just to use it to back up my new MacBook Pro and all my PC's. It choked on at least five backup attempts usually after 10+ hrs.
Returned to Apple store and upgraded to the 1 TB (glutton for punishment). I asked the person in the store to test my return which she verified as bad and then test the one I was to buy. The first two she brought out to test were DOA and the third finally appeared to work.
I went home to start all over again. Again, it could not complete a backup on my new MacBook Pro. After beginning a backup, I calculated that it would take five days for it to back up the 60GB I'm using on the Mac but it never got beyond 12GB before halting with a nebulous error.
I've had it. It was bad enough the thing was dog slow but it does nothing as advertised.
I'm sure I was merely unlucky here but I am not willing to throw away any more of my time on this product. It's a shame.
Mike

"Okay wireless router, but DO NOT BUY as backup device!" on by CNETJS12
Pros: Access to all my computers, printers, and other network devices from both Apple computers and PCs. Ease of setup and great service (for what it's worth) if you are under warranty.
Cons: This device should NOT be used as a backup for critical data that is not backed up elsewhere, the power supply fails and you can't recover your data. This device is a horrible failure as a backup system and you won't know it until it is too late.
Summary: Whoever developed this product should be immediately fired and all purchasers should receive refunds. The power source on my Time Capsule failed after less than a year. I took it to the Apple store and (very good customer service as always) they offered to replace it for free immediately. But then the bad news - we can't get the data off or pull the entire disk out in order to recover your data. Let's think about this - a device that is designed to backup data that, when it has a non-disk-related failure, there is no way to recover the data - what a concept! Seems Apple sealed the chassis in such a way that the disk will not function if the chassis is opened. The kid "genius" at the Apple store actually said to me, "Well the data is still on your computer," obviously not understanding the purpose of a large off-computer storage device for large files and backups. Only Apple could think this up. Of course the Apple "genius" immediately offered to replace the capsule with a brand new one, but when I asked about wiping or destroying the old disk so that my data could not be stolen, this 19-year old "genius" tells me not to worry, just hand it over to us at Apple. You can trust that we will take good care of it. Great idea in this age of identity theft and other nasty things! Of course you're at their mercy, because they say if you try anything else yourself, the warranty is void, and then they won't even give you the new one. I have had many PC-based storage systems fail, but I've always been able to recover most or all of the data unless the disk itself was physically damaged - usually by simply pulling the disk and putting it in another system. I would love to get a full refund for this item, as I believe it does not serve the purpose for which it is intended and advertised. I now have a 1 TB storage drive that makes a good paperweight, because I will never trust it to hold my precious data again, nor will I ever buy a storage system from Apple again. Doing my best to spread the word far and wide about this fraud!
