"BEWARE - don't lose your important data with this thing" on by holmesdw
Pros: the fact that it is a NAS
Cons: Overheats
Locks up with flashing red lights
Complete loss of many gigabytes of data
HUGE waste of time
MASSIVE loss of dataSummary: Don't even begin to consider this drive if your intention is to use it to store data... It will store it ok but, without warning, will lock up hard as a rock (what it has now become) and any stored data will be completely inaccessible.
Despite numerous attempts for assistance, Seagate customer / technical support has not even bothered to reply at all... Don't waste your time and money here.

Agree, mine did the same. I have a Windows environment. Here is how I got to the data:
Remove a few screws as you go along, some may have been under paper covers. Pry the vertical side bottom edges of the plastic case outwards from the bottom plate and break off pieces until you can lift the cover off. Lift the metal disk case off the bottom that has the power connector. Bend open the metal cage to get the disk out. You now have a SATA disk with a linux file system. Here is what worked for me, I had the same blinking lights: I used an old disk to install Ubuntu Linux on a desktop. From a boot CD I ran SpinRite by Gibson Research (www.grc.com) to do a deep surface analysis and bypass bad spots on the disk. Then I mounted the disk in Linux, the largest partition has the user data in folders. Connect another drive (mine was formatted by Windows) to copy the data to. After the data were moved I got a cheap external drive housing (~$30) and stuck the Maxtor disk in it. -
Agreed, complete wast of time and money
