"Exactly what I wanted"5.0 starson by famousdavis1
Pros: Terrific content filters; very customizable
Cons: Required reboot after changing a setting; annual subscription cost
Summary: WHY I LIKE IT: Because it is a hardware based content filter (eliminating most pornography, etc..) Prior to using securespot I used software based filters that required installation on each computer. My kids are older now (16, 19) and along with their friends, they mostly use laptops to access my high-speed network. It was not feasible to try and load software onto each persons's PC -- that's where securespot solves the problem. Now, every person using my network is subject to my content settings; I'm much more comfortable with that. (Other hardware based content filters are marketed to small businesses and cost an astronomical amount of money!)
THE EXTRAS: I really didn't need securespot for the anti-virus, firewall, etc., and other than the main computer that I set up, I wasn't required to add those features on every other PC (and I didn't) -- I followed simple instructions to change the setting in that regard. (The license does allow you to install the antivirus, firewall, and anti-spyware on up to four computers.) BUT NOTE -- the content filter works on as many computers as your network allows (a big plus!)
SPEED-PERFORMANCE: After the intial setup, my broadband speed has not diminished in the least -- still "lightning" fast. (What's with the guy talking about 28.8 modem speed?!) By the way, my PC is good, but not great: a 2.0GHz Athlon XP processor, 1GB RAM, Windows XP Home w/SP2.
SUPPORT: Setting securespot up required several support calls (one using a chat session; one calling their toll free number.) Both times the support was helpful and friendly and most importantly, the "problem" was solved. (By the way, one problem was the result of my own error; the second problem was resolved by unplugging securespot, the router, and the modem -- and then turning them back on in the same order.)
PRICE: It was on sale at Best Buy for $80. I hate the idea of having to pay another $80 when my year's subscription expires though.
OKAY, technically I would only rate this item an "8" (due to the few "cons" I listed)-- but since I think several overeacted by rating it "abysmal /1" -- I wanted to provide some necessary "balance."
