    "Linksys drops the ball again"

    by dh21187 on January 9, 2007

Pros: It hold papers down on your desk nicely.

Cons: No stable internet connection, USB storage option doesn't work, No stable firmware for product, Tech support is in India and cannot be understood, India speakers read from manuals and are rude.

Summary: DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. IT DOES NOT WORK.

I installed this unit approximately one week ago and it will not stay connected to the internet no matter what I have tried or Linksys technical support has. Their support staff is in India and they have no idea of what to do without reading from a manual. I spent hours on the phone with them being transferred from one person to the next who could not resolve the problems with the product. They originally claimed it was user configuration error, which wasn't true, as I spent hours with them and they could not find anything configured improperly to explain why the unit would not maintain a connection to the internet.

After several days of no help from India, I was eventually passed back to the US and spoke to Brian Beals, the supposed guru who could fix the problem, NOT.

I spent about an hour on the phone with him and he admitted the unit has an unstable firmware version installed on it from the factory. He sent me a new firmware version, 1.03.2, which he claimed would fix the problem, but it didn't. I now have no connection at all and have been forced back to using a direct connection from my PC to my cable modem to get an internet connection. He, rather than stay on the phone with me to ensure the firmware worked, rushed me off the line and said he would contact me if I was still having the same problem, which I am, but is now even worse. NICE CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Beals also mentioned there was a problem with the USB storage capability with the unit, which also doesn't work with most units also due to firmware problems. This explained why I couldn't see my NAS on my network after I plugged it into the WRT350N. GREAT JOB LINKSYS....

My repeated e-mails back to this guru have gone answered and I am stuck with a $160.00 paperweight on my desk now. I am going to request a refund from where I purchased it as Linksys has shown quality and service are not a priority to them.

It's been almost a month since the latest firware flash and it now seems to be stable. If it reamins this way, I would recommend this unit.
    Updated
Once again my router has gone paws up and stopped working for no reason. I spent an hour with Linksys who could not resolve the issue. I got it working today by flashing the firmware with an older version available on their website. It is now up an running again showing the problem with this unit is clearly a firmware issue. DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT... It will not work

Not only does the thing lose internet connectivity as well as local connectivity several times a day, the support staff says that they are unaware of this problem. At least the one I spoke to assured me that this problem is not known to him or to any of his colleagues. That should have been a warning. If you point out the various discussions on the internet (including a Linksys hosted forum, now shutdown but viewable as archive) they tell you they don?t have access to the internet!!!! Then put you through a variety of motions to 'troubleshoot' the problem. You will be asked to: use the clone the MAC address feature, reset the router several time and reconfigure it, reboot you machine a few times, install OS patches you don?t need, connect directly to the cable modem to prove that the cable modem is not broken, light incense sticks, etc. over a period of days ? because calls to the support desk ?drop? without warning and the process takes about 6-8 hours that, for most of, are hard to squeeze out in a single day. They say that this particular piece may be defective and require you to go through a very painful RMA process. No refunds!! That means you get a few days of downtime and then get to deal with the headaches all over again with a new one of these.
If Cisco want to redeem themselves in the eyes of the customers they will admit to releasing an unusable and utterly failed product do a product recall. They must offer the offering a choice of refund or replacement with a model that does work.

Same problem. The network connection drops every five minutes and takes another five minutes to reconnect. Tried the Linksys suggestions from the web site, but nada. I work from home and have to have a solid connection. After wrestling with this clunker a while, I pulled the plug and amd back to my old wireless G router. At least I stay connected.

    Don't buy this thing.

From your comments would have thought you would have rated it 2 of 10 -- not 8 of 10.

You rate it as 8 out of 10 (with 10 being perfect) and then rant.

    It makes utterly no sense.

Thanks, I was going to buy one. I had one of Linksys's other models about a year ago and had similar connection problems. I will wait for the technology to improve. I know that companies that use India for support do not care about the customer. Customer support in this country has gone to hell.

After 30 days of struggling with my WRT350N I will have to agree with you. This has been the total opposite of all other wireless routers I have ever experienced before. This unit is unstable to say the least in regards to wireless connections. I have all linksys wireless N draft equipment and not able to keep a stable wireless connection. I have Comcast digital voice service and my router is connected to the internet via an MTA Media Terminal Adapter. Everytime I recieve a phone call I loose my wireless network, Which I never lost my wireless G network on the same MTA. My wireless G router was one of the first G mode routers put out by Microsoft Model MN-700 and it has worked flawlessly since new. I tried firmware ver 1.03.2 which did improve wireless connection somewhat but still unit is slowed down extremly during a phone. It does however work great when I am etherneted in to it. But I bought the unit for the supposed extended wireless range, NOT! Anybody else out having any luck with any N draft equipment? I am getting ready to return this unit and use wireless bridges and multiple Wireless G routers to expand my range
