Pros: Low monthly service price for a lot of features
Cons: Horrible customer service, so-so call quality, phone is reliant on modem, ISP, and electric company all working smoothly or its a NO GO. False advertising.
Summary: I got rid of my traditional land line phone over 5-years ago when the only calls I received on it were telemarketers. Everyone I knew called my cell phone, and I have never had a problem with my Sprint service. In August however, I started working a few days a week from home and decided to get a home phone line... that's when the nightmare began!
I decided to go with Vonage service, because the service was so cheap and it came with a lot of features including unlimited long distance. The sign up process was a breeze online, and my positive experience with Vonage stops there.
From day one I had trouble with the UTStarcom Wi-Fi phone I had purchased for $102.48, including activation and 1st month's service. Customer support was irritating at best: I first had to navigate through an automated voice response system, then I was transferred to a live person, in the Philippines, who listened to my issues and then cold transferred me to tech support, in India. Tech support wasn't able to resolve my issue, so they cold transferred me to advanced tech support in New Jersey.
Advanced tech support fixed my initial problems, but I never found the phone service be reliable enough to use when I worked from home. Subsequently, I tried to cancel my account four times over the next 60 days and get my money back, as the company advertises a 60-day satisfaction guarantee. No such luck, i just kept getting transferred to very aggressive sales agents who would talk me into circles and frustrate me until I would hang up.
THEY WOULD NOT CANCELL MY SERVICE. I had to call my local telephone company to have my number ported over at which point Vonage charged me a $130 early termination penalty.
In the end I paid over $300 for less than 3-hours of phone service. I have filed complaints with the BBB and the New Jersey Attorney General. PLEASE DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER VONAGE. Thank You.
