Apple on MacBook, MacBook Pro optical drive noise -- with sound samples
MacBooks and MacBook Pros exhibit some strange optical drive noises, which Apple has now acknowledged.
Apple has posted a Knowledge Base article discussing noises made by MacBook and MacBook Pro optical drives. Most of these noises are within spec, according to Apple, while others may be "in excess."
The company has even posted a series of sample sound files portraying normal noises generated by activities like waking the computer from sleep, burning and or playing discs, and insertion/ejection.
Our in-house MacBook Pro has certainly exhibited noises similar to all of the sound files posted by Apple, with the wake-from-sleep disc checking noise being the most irritating, but apparently within normal boundaries.
