AT&T Broadband users have problems with Mail.app

CNET staff

Several readers are reporting that they have been unable to receive email via Apple's Mail.app (version 1.2.5 (v.552) using the ISP AT&T Broadband.

Shirley Sanderson writes: "This is the case on both my desktop Mac (G4/dp500) and the 15" G4 laptop. Both machines are running OSX 10.2.6 and the recently released Safari v. 1.0 (not a beta). Mail contacts the ISP, but never gets past the "preparing to receive mail" step-just an endless spinning wheel.

AT&T Broadband was acquired by Comcast several months ago, and according to customer relations representatives, is changing its system toward the end of June so that e-mail will still reach subscribers without a change in email address. This may be a cause of the problem.

Readers report that other e-mail clients like Eudora work are still able to retrieve mail.

In order to resolve the problem, users should make the following changes to their Account preferences in Mail.app:

  • Change their email address from "user@attbi.com" to "user@comcast.net"
  • Change the pop server from "mail.attbi.com" to "mail.comcast.net"
  • Change the smtp server from "mail.attbi.com" to "smtp.comcast.net"
