Epson Updater pulled: feedback from readers; Epson replies with the "reason"

We continue to get mixed reports about the Epson Stylus Driver Updater v1.0ES (see yesterday's item). Several readers now report having no problem with the update. Others continue to reportTwo readers (Jim Reffner and Rob Yaccarino, both using an Epson Stylus Color 900) found that rebuilding the desktop resolved the problems they were having after installing the update.

In any case, as posted here yesterday, the updater was removed from Epson's site and is presently not available. Several readers sent us a copy of a reply from Epson as to why it was removed. It suggests that there is nothing wrong with the Updater itself:

Due to issues beyond our control, the Macintosh Updater file STUPDTR1.SEA.hqx has been temporarily removed from the Epson Website. We experienced some difficulty with our Internet server due to the large demand for the updater file. Please be patient as we are working on a solution for this issue. Please check back with the Epson site in the near future for this link.

I am a bit skeptical of this explanation. I see no reason why this updater should have led to such a greater demand than previous similar updates as to force its removal. Also, as several readers noted, the name of the update file, which could pass as an abbreviation for "stupid trick," seems a bit strange (it could also stand for "Stylus Updater," although virtually every other update file for the Mac begins with the letter M). In any case, the word from Epson is that all is well with the file.
