Andy Wu writes about an apparent bug in iPhoto 1.1.1related to the import problems noted in our iPhoto 1.0 MacFixIt Report. A MacFixIt Forums thread (iPhoto v1.1.1 problems) covers this and includes the solution to the crashing problem, as mentioned in our iPhoto 1.1. MacFixIt Report. There are also a few threads on this matter in Apple's Discussion Boards; see for example: one, two, and three.

"In summary, iPhoto 1.1.1 appears to be very picky about JPEGs. If they are not 'virgin' files direct from a camera, they may not import into 1.1.1. That is why some people have reported some (but not necessarily all; I myself have had some trouble replicating this symptom in the last day) lost photos after updating to 1.1.1. Also, if you edit a file with Graphic Converter, Photoshop, etc, the file may suddenly become unreadable by iPhoto and it simply ignores it the next time you open iPhoto. So if you're not paying attention, it may stop displaying many of your files (in effect, 'losing' them). If you try to import them (they still exist in the Library folder), you get an error saying the file is unreadable (and in some cases, it will just crash).

One work-around is to copy the file to the desktop (or other partition) and reimport from there. Another is to export or convert the file with Graphic Converter and import the newly created file."
