Users of iPhoto 09 are experiencing issues with keywords and shortcuts. Adding a new keyword to a photo results in iPhoto automatically assigning a shortcut for that keyword and making it a favorite. Many users feel this is a workflow bug.

Apple Support Discussions user "DVMagicStudios" writes:

"I just upgraded and was adding some new photos to '09 and needed a new keyword. When I added it (and several tests later) the new keyword (from the Keyword window), it automatically assigned a shortcut AND made it a favorite. I tried deleting the shortcut AND tried dragging it from the Favorite back to the total keyword list and it won't make it NOT a favorite. Yet, when I drag from the regular keyword area to a favorite (quick group) area, it DOES make it a favorite. Weird. Any ideas on how to get favorite keywords out of the quick group area of Keywords window?"
Possible Workarounds
Apple Support Discussions user "aandnota" offers this workaround:
"Yeah, this is really bugging me too. Here's my workaround, as long as I notice right away:
1. Delete keyword. (This is why the workaround is only good if you notice the problem immediately.)
2. Assign the desired keyword directly to a couple of individual photos, rather than creating it in the Keywords pane.
3. Now go to the Keywords pane, select Edit Keywords, and try to add it. It will tell you that the keyword already exists.
4. Now hit the minus sign to delete the keyword that has not been accepted. It will give you that same message about how the keyword already exists, but you will now find that keyword available in the Keywords pane (without a shortcut and not in the Quick Groups area)."
Apple Support Discussions user "Neil Paisnel" offers another workaround:
"In either Photo or Events view (maybe places/faces have not tried)

View | Keywords selected

Window 'Show Keywords' NOT selected

Click in the Add Keyword area under the thumbnail and type the new keyword there.

If you then view Keywords (CMD K) the new keyword is there, but not in the Quick box and with no shortcut selected."

It has not been reported if the latest update to iPhoto 09 addressed this issue.
