Margin Note: Seeking solutions for Power Mac G4 MDD noise problem

CNET staff

We're seeking creative (preferably useful) solutions for the notorious Power Mac G4 Mirrored Drive Door excessive noise problem.

Though Apple has issued a firmware update that purportedly decreases the noise level, and introduced new systems that have a quieter thermal cooling design, some owners are still having severe problems.

Tom Dams, an audio producer from Germany, recently offered MacFixIt some additional insight on the noise issue that should lend some aid in attempting to design a solution:

"There are five internal fans altogether and investigations have shown that at least the big main fan and the two power supply fans are responsible for irritating noise levels - in some cases more than 60 db."

Dams also reports that in Germany, two of the larger computer retailer chains have started to offer 'silence kits' for the MDD series. Apparently, one of the manufacturers is offering a continued warranty (since Apple's is voided in the process) after installing the kit, while the other is not.

So if you've got your own methodology for keeping the Power Mac G4 MDD's noise at a tolerable level, let us know. The most effective - or at least interesting - designs will receive a complimentary MacFixIt pro subscription.
