Microsoft Office 98 released; SAM conflict noted

CNET staff
David Kingsbury just received "Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition Golden Code Evaluation CD." It included a statement that said Office had been released for shipping, but might not actually be available for several weeks. [Actually, it now looks like availability will be within days.]

David adds one troubleshooting note: The initial drag-and-drop install works fine, but there is a problem when you try to run an application for the first time and finish the install. As stated in the Read Me file, all Office 98 applications conflict with SAM's Virus Definitions prior to February 1998. The program will not install until you turn off the SAM extension. More recent Definitions files are supposed to work. However, David used the March 1998 Definitions and Office would still not complete the install (until he disabled SAM).

And don't forget that you also need the SAM 4.5.3 update for Office 98 (as mentioned here previously). (Thanks also to Bob Edmiston.)

Meanwhile, Jack Lau reports that updating the March 98 SAM Virus Definitions via the 4.5.1 Patcher, solved some problems he was having with Microsoft Internet Explorer.
