New iMacs introduced, no FireWire 800

CNET staff

Apple has revised its iMac line to two models: The new 17-inch widescreen model features a 1 GHz PowerPC G4 processor and 133 MHz system bus; 256 MB of DDR memory; a faster 4x SuperDrive for playing and burning CDs and DVDs; and internal support for AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth priced at US $ 1,799. T

he 15-inch flat panel model features an 800 MHz G4 processor and is now priced at US $ 1,299 - but lacks the AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth capabilities of its pricier cousin.

Simultaneously, Apple scaled back prices on its eMac line, which now starts at US $ 999, with a US $ 1,299 SuperDrive-equipped.

Of particular note is that FireWire 800 makes no appearance in the re-tooled consumer models, confirming Apple's restriction of this connectivity to professional settings.

The new 2003 iMacs, like their recently announced PowerBook and Power Mac relatives, cannot boot in Mac OS 9.

More information on the new models is available from a press release or the Apple Store.
