Netscape updates 4.07 versions to 4.08 If you don't want to upgrade to the revamped Communicator 4.5, you can make the more minor upgrade to Netscape 4.08.

FileGuard and Mac OS 8.1 problem Not especially new news, but we have not noted it here before: ASD Software describes a problem with FileGuard 3.1 and Mac OS 8.1 where "a computer will fail to start up properly the second time it is restarted after volume protection has been turned on. After this, the boot blocks have been removed from the disk and the System file is corrupt. This problem can happen either on HFS disks or on HFS disks." A Web page describes a work-around.

Iomega and FWB freeze Marvin Sperling was using Hard Disk ToolKit 2.5.3 and Iomega software 6.0.2. He found that when the Zip extension enabled and an external drive (formatted with HDT) was on at startup, his Mac would freeze. With the external drive off or the Iomega extension disabled, no freeze occurred. He contacted FWB about this. Marvin states that they told him: "they are aware of the problem but they can not say if the cause is FWB's or Iomega's."

Update: A possible fix here (as noted before in other similar situations) is to make sure that the Iomega extension loads before the HDT extension.

Peter Job had this problem. "Changing the Iomega extension load order did not help. What did work was reformatting the two external drives with Drive Setup 1.6.1."

Speed Doubler 8 and AppleScript load order glitch? Ben Aein had trouble getting Speed Doubler 8 to work. He kept getting an error message that said "AppleScript needs to be in the Extensions Folder for Faster File Copying to work." What he eventually discovered was that he had previously used Conflict Catcher to make the Speed Doubler 8 control panel (not the extension, which ordinarily loads prior to almost everything else) load prior to the AppleScript extension. When he reversed this load order, the error vanished.

SuperDisk and Virtual PC Imation's SuperDisk on an iMac will reportedly only work with Virtual PC when set up as a shared folder/volume. As stated on a Connectix Web page (and as previously noted here), this is also true for "all Mac SCSI drives (Jaz, Zip, SyQuest, etc. cartridges)."
