Odds and Ends: QuickTime updater bloated unnecessarily; Knowledge Base updates
QuickTime 6.5.1 updater bloated unnecessarily Last week, the French Mac site macbidouille.com reported that nearly half the size of the QuickTime 6.5.1 installer is due to multiple copies of the same graphic. We decided to check out this claim, so we downloaded and disected the QuickTime651.pkg installer package. Sure enough, the 34.6MB package contained fifteen copies of the exact same graphic -- a 1MB installer background image -- totaling 15MB. (We examined a few other Apple installer packages and found that they didn't suffer from this unnecessary bloat; evidently this was a one-time mistake.) Given the number of people who downloaded the QuickTime 6.5.1 installer, the joke was on Apple, whose bandwidth charges for distributing the installer were probably significantly more than they could have been.
