PC Card reader for desktop Macs: a follow-up

CNET staff
Last time, we mentioned the Minolta CD-10 adapter that lets you use PC cards on a desktop Mac. We received avariety of reader replies on the subject. Here are the highlights:
Rob Galbraith (of DigiNews) said that the Minolta product is officially discontinued, although you may still find it available. However, essentially the same product is available from Microtech (called Digital PhotoAlbum). SCM Micro is the actual manufacturer of the reader.

Also check out this SCM Microsystems Web page. (Thanks, Dwight Early.)

A. R. McCoy notes that the card reader does not support all current camera models. For example, it won't read Nikon CoolPix 100 cards (although it will do so on a Windows machine because of updated drivers available for that platform).

Fred McKenzie had problems using the Minolta reader to mount MS-DOS formatted cards. Possibly related, DigiNews reports that "MPL, manufacturer of the MCDisk series of card readers, has posted a document on patching the PC Exchange control panel to mount PC Cards on a Mac."

On the plus side, Tim Harvey found the Minolta reader available online atvarious locations for $80-$100. He writes: "The card works great and the speed of transfer is incredible. The Minolta CD-10 is recommended by Kodak and it accesses all formats of PCMCIA from level 1 through 3 type of cards."
