PowerBook G3 Series: sleep issues

PowerBook G3 Series: sleep issues

CNET staff
Graphics performance slow-down? Arsenio Tsounis recently bought a PowerBook G3 Series 233 MHz (with active matrix screen). He found that, after the PowerBook was put to sleep for 5 minutes or more, the machine's graphics performance (e.g., screen redraws, as seen when scrolling through a text document) was significantly slower. Apple Tech Support said they did not have any other reports like this, but sent him a a replacement PowerBook anyway. The replacement had the same problem. Apple eventually indicated that there may be "a problem with the ATI video drivers loading out of memory after the PowerBook is asleep for awhile." So far they have no fix.

Don't try this! Rick Darenberg put his PowerBook G3 Series to sleep while running on AC power, but with no battery installed. He later unplugged the machine to take it on a trip, forgetting to put the battery in before he did so (admittedly, not a great move). When he later installed the battery and tried to turn the machine on, it would not wake up from sleep. In fact, nothing could get the PowerBook to turn on, not the Power On key nor the restart key combination. It wasn't until he was able to plug the machine into an outlet that he could get the PowerBook going again.
